He was a decent keeper. Had a few dubious moments though. A particular moment against Chicago (I think it was '98) when after we had a 4-2 lead, and Chicago equalized, he turned around to the Ratz Nest and gave us a comic shrug of the shoulders. Not enough for hate, but certainly a moment that sticks in one's memory.
It's him and then Cannon as far as keeper for the Rapids. Cannon has the ability to easily pass him but it will take another year of good work for that to happen.
Marcus did a great job, and I didn't blame him for leaving at the time, it appeared to be the fulfillment of a dream, but from a team point of view, his leaving hurt the team that season. We were just peaking, and his surprising exodus was hard to take. I remember going over to practice and wondering why he was standing on the side in street clothes. We found out a few days later in the paper. Nonetheless, his play here at Colorado was always stellar. I would agree that he and Cannon were many notches above all the others.
Thanks, Spot. I had forgotten those. They were classic. I wish something similar might be seen on television now, something besides just advertising for the 4th of July. You would think the Rapids played a one match season. Maybe they do!?!
I thought Marcus was a great MLS keeper. Two things stand out: The other team would take a long shot and Marcus would disdainfully chest trap it or even head it sometimes, And he used to outpunt the coverage regularly really pissing Mooch off. Myernick, right in front of my section 105 seats would yell "Marcus, don't....!", but it was too late, there went the boomer.
