You can't replace either. Let's not be silly Our lockerroom stayed divided and in clicks while Rail was captain. He was s great Spanish reference, but not the best team leader. He was far better than Casillas though, ugh. I remember how much I would beg for Ramos to be the guy.
Yes Ramos is one of the Best, one of the guys you don't ******** with in the dressing room. A proper leader
Did anyone see Bale kick up a fuss when ZidaNe took him off or is this BS https://www.espn.com/soccer/soccer-...-burnley-for-sane-replacementunited-want-boga
Fully agreed. I love Raul, but he wasn't the best captain. Iker wasn't either. My fear is I don't see the next captain for Real Madrid.
Agree that Casemiro could possibly fill those shoes but aren’t our hands a bit tied re captaincy with the traditional way it’s been awarded? Of our starters both Benz and Varane are ahead of Case right?
Casemiro skipped my mind. Same combative personality but I don't know his influence inside the dressing room.
We’re talking about leadership here at the end of the day, so not wearing a captains armband doesn’t disqualify anyone from asserting their leadership traits on the rest of the team. For example I’d say Xabi Alonso was more of a captain during Mourinho’s years, in terms of leadership, organisation of the team than Iker was.
That isn't how he leads. That's why he is the best. The man relates to all, is actually diplomatic (not just with his nationality) and represents all; doing this while being a Spanish icon. Damn I will miss him man.
True, but I think the armband still carries unique weight. We’ve just been lucky lately that our best natural leader happened to wear it.
Out of current players after Sergio, in terms of apps it goes like this: 1. Marcelo (will leave before Sergio) 2. Karim (maybe outlasts Sergio? Maybe not) 3. Luka (same as Marcelo, though for some reason he's the 4th vice captain, behind Varane) 4. Varane (don't think he'd make a very good captain, but he'll most probably wear the new C for a long time) 5. Isco 6. Dani 7. Toni 8. Gareth (lol) 9. Casemiro 10. Lucas 11. Nacho 12. Marco
Is it appearances or length of time at the club? I thought it was the latter, which would explain Varane being ahead of Modric.
I also thought it was the latter, join date of the player although Case joined and went to Castilla at first then got loaned/sold then brought back so IDK how that all works. Take the latest date he came that stuck?
Yep. Yeah that must be it. Though they'll be more or less the same, bar any long term injuries or tough competition for a spot as in Varane's case.
I like Varane as captain. He is actually learning from the guy beside him how to do it even though they seem to have completely different personalities.
Yeah captain by seniority seems like an archaic idea We should just appoint the person that actually fits the job
In a way I get it and like it (loyalty, reward, longest serving member should know all about and display Madrisimo) but it doesn’t always make the best captain. I mean Varane is too chill to be one imo but I’m sure there will be others who step up to lead in Ramos absence and even with Varane being the captain If it happens that way.
Varane might not look it but you never know he might be a decent captain, he’s VC of the French National team now and he’s captained before, he might turn out to be just fine
I dont think its that great of idea to change to "appearances" because guys who can't crack the lineup don't survive anyway. And giving the coach authority to name the Captains takes away slot of their influence because the squad already knows which side to take on any given issue. Mourinho would have permanently destroyed the club, careers, etc., out of spite and we would have never seen la Decima much less a three-peat.
