Mea culpa. An earlier report on ESPN characterized it that way, but they have since changed it. Speaking of Mickey Rat's Sports Emporium, they ran an Outside the Lines yesterday where a Throns player described Riley asking her to his hotel room for " film review" and greeting her at the door in his underwear It went downhill from there until she managed to get herself out of there. I just wanted to scream "what the hell year did you think this was - 1972?". The problem with so much of this stuff isn't just some lame loser with zero game clumsily trying to use his authority to get over on a vulnerable young woman. Rather, it's just a really, really stupid man. Even so, it didn't have to blow up in everyone's face. All they had to do is respond appropriately, openly fire the guy for cause, issue a terse "we won't stand for this sort of crap" public statement and it all would have been over and forgotten by now. Crisis management 101. Idiots. There's just no way in hell that the complaint didn't go straight to Paulsons desk, and he's going to have to own it. Inexcusably stupid.
Nailed it. This is such a needless PR disaster from all of the organizations involved. MLS, NWSL, and USSoccer could have set an example of what to do with these kinds of allegations: Fire and disavow the POS. Clean cut, easy peasy. But instead, here we are. Alaska Airlines - Portland Soccer's biggest sponsor - is reevaluating their relationship. Hank should sell and kick Merrit's ass for being such a colossal screw up when all he had to do was the right thing.
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/uswnt-...becky-sauerbrunn-nwsl-portland-210052427.html Sauerbrunn weighing in on the issue. Does the USWNT bear any responsibility or considered enablers? There was far more risk than currency at that time but they were not NWSL employees either.
Wow. Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns announce that Gavin Wilkinson and Mike Golub have been fired. Didn't think it would happen. Long overdue. #RCTID #BAONPDX— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) October 5, 2022
One is forced to ask the esteemed Mr Carlisle: Really? You didn't think the organization would fire a team executive who crudely propositioned the female head coach and the guy who quietly dismissed the pervert male head coach, swept it all under the rug and then wrote a glowing recommendation that got him another job coaching women shortly thereafter? Honestly? I know that you're a big shot journalist but any idiot knows that the first step back from a monumental disaster like this is to fire the guys responsible for it. Heads must roll. What else were they going to do with a couple of guys who have made the CEO look like a fool at best and at worst complicit in sexual harassment and who will almost certainly be forced to divest himself of any and all connection with the team? Give them both a nice raise?
Don't forget the part about said female head coach now being President of the USSF. They're hoping that this makes any federation action more business and less of a (justified) personal vendetta.
When you think about it, it makes sense but still strange at first... Josh Wolff is suspended for the #AustinFC Decision Day match against #Rapids96 due to technical staff yellow card accumulation. The coach was also fined for violating the mass confrontation policy in Vancouver. @TheStrikerNews— Chris Bils (@ChrisBils) October 7, 2022
But wait, there's more... U.S. Soccer President: More Abuse Cases Emerged After NWSL Report (msn.com)
Think this could be really entertaining and fun to watch. Would be a 7v7 winner take all world cup style tourney next summer. Fields would be outdoors, 65 yards x 45 yards which is the length of roughly an indoor field at Resolute (67 x 28), but wider. https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog-th...ers-announce-$1m-winner-take-all-soccer-event
Ok but when do we start the conversation about 1) the quality of play, 2) pro/rel, and 3) how they don't do it this way in Europe?
Since there are some people around here who know stuff, I have a question: I saw this article about how, after Ireland's women beat Scotland, they sang "Up the RA" in the locker room. Lots of folks are apparently bent out of shape by this and everybody is busily issuing abject apologies. Ireland women's footballers sing pro-IRA song (msn.com) The thing is that I thought that Up the RA, rather than a "pro-IRA song" was in fact a pro-RAngers anthem and is aimed at provoking Celtic fans. Can someone explain what the deal is?
If anyone read books anymore, I'd love to write one about fandom in Europe and what each club is actually based upon. Here in the US, we like European clubs for a variety of reasons (pretty uniforms, familiar players, friends follow them, etc) but so many of the clubs are really based on some deep rooted reasons (religion, factories, rich/poor, etc)
Liga MX Liguilla began last night. Club America just blew the doors off of Puebla, 6-1. Rayados and Cruz Azul finish scoreless. Two good games coming tonight. Toluca and Santos followed by Tigres and Pachuca. If you haven't made a habit of catching Andre-Pierre Gignac, you need to tune in.
And people talk shit about MLS, at least our league has never gotten the goal size wrong... Hull City vs Birmingham City has been delayed because the goals are too big. They are currently being sawed 2 inches smaller. We’ve seen it all now! 😂 pic.twitter.com/aF1HpmD3vM— SPORTbible (@sportbible) October 16, 2022
Yeah! We just paint the box size wrong… LOL MLS playoff between Montreal and Toronto delayed due to the penalty box lines painted wrongly! Madness! #TFCLive— Ben Teague (@bpjteague) November 23, 2016
Just to show that possession isn't everything, Union Berlin beat Dortmund 2-0. They had 23% possession (but shots and shots on goal were essentially equal).

Some great Swiss investigative work on a $387+ Million dollar Qatari funded espionage campaign against pretty much everyone at FIFA over the last 10 years. Likely going to be some additional investigations within the US on this, as a former CIA operative's company was running the backend of this. He may well want to stay in Qatar the rest of his life. Not shocking to anyone following Qatar, but shocking how sloppy they have been. They have internal project documents which look very well to be legit. https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/busine...the-world-of-football-in-switzerland/48022952
Per the Dispatch: In high school soccer, Kyle Lapper made six saves and New Albany advanced to a regional final to be played tomorrow against Olentangy Liberty. ...Lapper? As in Mike?
