    I lived in DC 1994-2000. I remember occasional articles in the Post about the State Department see the then nascent Taliban as forces for stability in the post Soviet Afghanistan. At the time, the Taliban controlled maybe a third of the country. She articles must have been around 1994-95 as the Taliban popped up ion 1994 and took control of most of the country by 1996.

    And while the Saudis were important, let's not forget the role of pakistan's ISI

    That's strange, I recall the US nominally supporting the Northern Alliance which was fighting the Taliban. Oh man, now I've have to look this stuff up. My memory is not what it used to be. I do seem to recall that the ISI was a major backer of the Taliban, though I may be mistaken on this as well.
