Meh, he was better at Aris. The only difference is in that all-star game he was playing on the right and in the middle, and drifting, while Cuper had him chained to the left wing.

He succeeds in MLS, is the U-20's best player, then fails to find a foothold so far in Europe, and people think he's gotten worse. Now suddenly he's not good enough for MLS and U-23's. There's quite an assumption in that logic.
