I think our boy and Kagawa were the two best players for BVB that half. Schurle was pretty invisible, Castro and Ginter were poor, and Dembele was meh. The entire backline did not do very well in possession, mainly down to the fact Castro isn't moving enough to become that entry pass into the midfield, forcing Kagawa to drop deep and fill that role. I see why BVB was looking at Zelalem. Castro is a good player on his day, but he isn't really an 8, and can't fill in for Weigl effectively. Sahin can play that role, but gets injured far too often to be counted on consistenly. I think GZ could play in a Weigl-esque role in some cases, if he develops physically, for some decent teams in the future.
He made a couple good passes in their final third that Dortmund couldn't do anything with. Other than that he was mediocre, like the rest of Dortmund. 5.5 rating or some shit.
Even those were pretty mundane. Either Dembele holds the ball for a year and everyone is off, or he runs offside by 3 yards and just hangs out.
Dembele looks hungover from that Benfica tilt. I've never seen his touch as poor as it is today. The stuff you pointed out is par for the course but usually he makes up for it with moments of magic. Not so today.
This looks like a typical pokal match against lower league sides. Good practice for Concacaf qualification.
Yeah, very Concacaf style opponents. Incredibly physical challenges, moaning and groaning at any contact, playing to the ref
