    Brasilerao 1979

It was played between Sep 16 and Dec 13, consisting in three stages, plus Final stage. 94 clubs played the tournament!!!

    Ranking after Semifinal games
    [IMG]
As TomNeill said, Placar's rules considered, in its ranking, footballers who played 2/3 of their team's games (66.67% of the club's games)

    Final Ranking

This year, Brasilerao 1979, applied a confusing system.

Clubs having a Free-Pass to Third Stage, the 1978 champion/runner up. Finally,
    Guarani played 3 games.
    Palmeiras - 5 games only.

Big clubs from Rio/Sao Paulo pretends starting since Third Stage, this was denied by CBF, so, Corinthians, Portuguesa, Santos and Sao Paulo were banned this year.

Finally, 6 clubs from Rio and 6 from S.Paulo, enters since Second Stage, as a result,
Flamengo and others only played 10 games.
This year, runner up, Vasco, played 14 games.

Rio/S.Paulo clubs eliminated at 2nd stage played 7 games (Fluminense, Botafogo, etc)
Non Rio/S.Paulo clubs eliminated at 2nd stage played 16 games (Gremio, Vila Nova, etc)

    Stats 1970s (raw grades)

    ---------- Avg top50 -- Avg top10
    1970-------- 6.75--------- 7.79
    1971-------- 6.97--------- 7.86
    1972-------- 7.57--------- 8.12
    1973-------- 7.47--------- 7.91
    1974-------- 7.52--------- 7.99
    1975-------- 7.45--------- 7.95
    1976-------- 7.66--------- 8.28
    1977-------- 7.71--------- 8.24
    1978-------- 7.53--------- 8.02
    1979-------- 7.74--------- 8.51

Higher averages were from 1979, 77 and 76 Brasilerao. Ratings given were from 3-10, but, magazine itself recognized, they gave a lot of 10/high points in many matches.

Since mid 1980s they became stricter with grades assigned. In the resume, showed in this last page, I try to correct this in the stars (1-5) given in tables 1970-74 and 1975-79.

    From 1970-71:
    5-stars (8.5-9.0 points)
    4-stars (8.0-8.5 points)
    3-stars (7.67-8.0 points)
    2-stars (7.33-7.67 points)
    1-star (7.0-7.33 points)

    From 1972-79:
    5-stars (9.0-9.5 points)
    4-stars (8.5-9.0 points)
    3-stars (8.0-8.5 points)
    2-stars (7.6-8.0 points)
    1-star (7.2-7.6 points)

    Exceptions to this rules were:
    - Internationals players at borderline (+/- 0.5), were given the upper category.
    - Non Internationals players at borderline (+/- 0.5), were given the lower category.
    - Players elected at SAPotY or Ideal Teams, in other magazines, were given 1 extra-Star.

Top Averages (grades corrected by stars)

    ------------- Avg top50 -- Avg top10 -- Team-A
    1970-74------- 4.40--------- 8.30--------- 6.90
    1975-79------- 4.30--------- 7.40--------- 6.50

Overall quality (top50) looks similar at both Eras, but, the 1st half of 1970s looks better than 2nd half, especially for very top players and Ideal Team.

According to the journal "Jornal da Tarde" (São Paulo), Ademir was also the main reason for the 69's Robertão title.
And a curious fact: the celebration game was played against Ghana's National Team. The game ended 3 x 1 for Palmeiras (first half with the starters and the second half with the reserves).
