The Philippine Football Federation unveiled today, August 22, the 22-man squad for the upcoming friendly match against Turkmenistan on September 2, at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.

The friendly match against Turkmenistan will be the Azkals’ first match in their preparations for the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, which the country will be hosting on November 19. Turkmenistan are ranked 119th in the world.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two sides. Turkmenistan came away with a 5-0 hammering in their first meeting in the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers. The second match saw Turkmenistan score twice in the dying minutes to win it, 2-1 in the 2012 Challenge Cup semifinals. The third match saw the Philippines claim a tight 1-0 win in the 2014 Challenge Cup Qualifiers. Their last meeting saw the Philippines knockout the Central Asian side in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup Group stage. Phil Younghusband and Patrick Reichelt found the back of the net for the Azkals in that game.

Overseas-based Azkals such as Neil Etheridge, Javier Patiño, Iain Ramsay, Daisuke Sato, and Luke Woodland have been called up for the friendly. However, it remains unclear whether Etheridge, Ramsay, Sato, and Woodland will be available for the Suzuki Cup since the tournament does not fall within the FIFA international match window. Patiño, on the other hand, might be available for the tournament as the Chinese Super League is scheduled to end on November 5.

Kaya FC’s Junior Muñoz is the newest inclusion to the squad. The defender has been a regular fixture for his club and has apparently impressed Azkals coach Thomas Dooley.

Holdovers on the squad are Amani Aguinaldo, Misagh Bahadoran, Kenshiro Daniels, Patrick Deyto, Daniel Gadia, Kevin Ingreso, Roland Muller, Manny Ott, Patrick Reichelt, Simone Rota, Stephan Schrock, Martin Steuble, Miguel Tanton, Dennis Villanueva, James Younghusband, and Phil Younghusband.

Stephen Palla was also originally called up but has informed management that he is injured.

After the match against Turkmenistan the Azkals will face Kyrgyzstan on September 6 in Bishkek for another friendly.

Potential Azkals starting centerback Jesper Nyholm who is playing for Swedish 2nd tier team Dalkurds FF has been linked to several Swedish Allsvenkan team(top tier) including Sundsvall, Göteborg and Djurgården who have all expressed an interest in him. He has already visited one of them and said that he will be making a decision by October.

"According to Adil Kizil's Jesper Nyholm one of the show's best central defenders. Kizil is therefore not surprised that many clubs are now showing interest in the 22-year-old Dalkurdförsvararen. "We have not made a decision yet," said Nyholm himself about his future. Nyholm, which was turned off when Dalkurd yesterday won against Ljungskile 4-1, has been watched from many quarters for its success splendid start to the Superettan. For GT.se confirms Nyholm he has been in contact with the Swedish big clubs, including IFK Gothenburg and sports director Mats Gren. Dalkurds sports manager Adil Kizil that the order he know of interest Nyholm from both "blue-white" and other clubs. - I know Blåvitt been here and watched our matches, but I have not been in contact with them. Five-six clubs follow Jesper and it is not surprising. He is the series' fastest defender and also one of the best. For me he is a Premier Division players today, said Kizil to GT.se."

Before the friendly against Bahrain in March 2015, "Having secured his PH passport, Fil-Spanish defender Alvaro Silva is also joining the trip." http://sports.inquirer.net/175954/etheridge-back-for-azkals-in-bahrain-friendly

Yet after that friendly, he was never considered by Dooley for whatever reason. He prefers youngsters. Even now with the injury of Rota, it's still youngsters that are being considered. Apart from the experienced Munoz, but has no national team experience, the defenders being considered are Aguinaldo, Sato, Daniels, Grommen. Pathetic set of defenders to say the least especially for a back three system!

I am not really sure what the reason is. Maybe it is a disciplinary or some other off the field reason? We certainly can use him otherwise.

On a good note, remember when I told you that there are a few high level youngsters in Europe who have the potential to be the mainstays of the Azkals moving forward replacing retired veterans. 22 y/o Nyholm is one of them and will most likely be playing in the top tier Swedish Allsvenkan league pretty soon. He has expressed in interest in joining the Azkals before but his rise to prominence recently has him apparently considering the Swedish national team as well.

I've said it before that Dooley was losing the plot. With the squad he picked for Kyrgyzstan, I think it's official!

Just like the WCQ away to Uzbekistan, he only named a 19-man squad with three GK's. Only four defenders, one of which is makeshift. Could have at least called up Sabio who is playing regularly and has experience! Also not even a call up for Hartmann who's been scoring for fun ever since his debut for Geylang a couple of months ago!

It's like he has a set group of players that he would pick from. Regardless of where you're playing (or even if your without a club) or what your form is, that's it! You'd be lucky if you were performing really well and he was there at the stadium watching and maybe you'd get a call-up (Munoz). And then he has a liking for youngsters.

I'd be surprised if the Philippines didn't lose against Kyrgyzstan!

Azkals tackle North Korea in Oct. 10 ‘friendly’

    By: Cedelf P. Tupas
WITH preparations for the AFF Suzuki Cup far from ideal recently, the Azkals got a boost after the Philippine Football Federation secured a quality opponent in North Korea in a friendly on Oct. 10.
PFF general secretary Ed Gastanes said Sunday the federation is only completing Fifa’s requirements to finalize the match against North Korea.
The Azkals already had a friendly against Turkmenistan cancelled early this month, while losing two key players in Patrick Reichelt and Simone Rota to knee injuries.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has unveiled plans for a national football league that is slated to kick-off in March 2017.

The national league, aptly named the Philippines Football League, will be composed of at least six club teams, each representing a city or a region.

According to the PFF, the tournament is envisioned to have a home-and-away, double round robin format. The top four sides will proceed into a play-off to determine the champion.

To qualify for the league, interested clubs will have to comply with the PFF's Club Licensing Regulations to be qualified to participate in the league.
UFL still hoping to play a role

The establishment of the Philippines Football League means that the United Football League (UFL) will be stepping down as the country's premier competition.

But UFL President Randy Roxas says that he hopes that the Metro Manila-based league will still have a role to play in developing the sport in the country.

"If there is a role for us to play for us still be involved in helping football in a second division format or in the youth, we leave that to the federation to work on," Roxas said.

The UFL currently hosts the country's biggest football clubs, which currently employs Philippine national team standouts such as the Younghusband brothers and Stephan Schrock.

There are no hard feelings for Roxas, who reminded the media that the UFL's authority comes from the PFF itself.

"You have to take note that our sanction comes from the federation," Roxas said. "Everything we do in the future will come from the sanction of the federation."
    Research backed venture

According to the PFF, the decision to start the league is supported by a nationwide market research conducted in 2015.

After interviewing 5,000 participants nationwide, a study by the Nielsens Company has identified key cities and reigions that could serve as an ideal starting home base for the clubs.

According to PFF General Secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes some of the factors considered include infrastructure, access, capacity of fans to pay, the existence of sponsors, and fan appreciation of the sport.

Here are locations identified by the research:

    Luzon

    Manila
    Makati
    Quezon City
    Marikina
    Bocaue
    Pampanga
    Laguna

    Visayas

    Bacolod
    Cebu
    Iloilo

    Mindanao

    Davao
    Cagayan de Oro
    Zamboanga City

Apart from identifying the locations, the PFF also divulged that the study showed that 30 percent of the Philippine population followed sports in general, with five percent following football.

Interested groups have until December to submit their PFF Club Licensing Regulations for the upcoming national league.

Good result for a game on the road. Kyrgyzstan won over Kazakhstan last week 2:0. Kazakhstan then drew Poland 2:2 couple of days ago! This despite missing mainstays Schrock, Reichelt, Palla, Rota and Patino. Etheridge was MOTM and helped preserved the lead.

The name. Gastanes said the league will be called the Philippines Football League (PFL). This was supposedly the most preferred name in a survey conducted by the Nielsen research firm last year.

The PFL will replace the UFL as the country's top tier of football.

The kickoff & the format. The league begins play in mid-March 2017 and must have at least 6 clubs who will represent communities.

It will be double round robin with home and away matches, plus a playoff phase afterwards involving the top 4 teams. No details were given on the format of the playoffs.

Gastanes added that there will be a knockout Cup competition with matches "interspersed" within the league schedule. Basically, it will follow the European model.

Initially there will be only one division, but as the league expands, it is hoped that two tiers can form with promotion and relegation between them. There is talk that the UFL, sans teams that will go to the PFL, will carry on as a second-tier competition.

The teams. Representatives from Loyola, Kaya, Ceres, Green Archers United, Agila-MSA, and Stallion were at the briefing. Global was not there but it's understood that they will take part.

Each team was given a copy of the club licensing regulations. The requirements will likely include a home stadium, a licensed head coach, one or two youth teams, and a guarantee of continued financial support from sponsors. These are based on club licensing norms of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The clubs have until the end of the year to study the licensing documents and apply.

Gastanes also said the PFL will be a fully professional league with both a salary cap and a salary floor, or minimum wage. Only 4 foreign players will be allowed in the roster and at least one must be from an AFC country.

If the PFF cannot muster at least 6 teams then Gastanes said they may still have a league, but it cannot be considered a national league by the AFC.

The cities. The participating clubs will be representing communities and the league will follow a home-and-away format.

Ceres La Salle will be the team in Bacolod. That's about all that is sure as of the moment. Teams must attach themselves to a city or area and include the name of the area in their name, which would mean some teams might need to tweak their articles of incorporation.

Araneta said the PFF will do a roadshow to pitch the league to cities in the Visayas and Mindanao. These areas could then either form a new side, enter an existing team, or adopt a current team from the UFL.

One thing is very likely, though: most of the teams will probably be representing communities in and around Metro Manila, at least for the meantime.

The Nielsen survey identified 14 areas in the Philippines that could support a pro football team. Aside from the expected places like Metro Manila, Iloilo, and Cebu, Pampanga and Zamboanga City were also surprisingly on the list.

There is some speculation that Davao could also field a team.

Finances. Each team will have to pay a franchise fee to the corporation that will be created to manage the league. Gastanes would not divulge the amount at the press conference and he said the teams will be the first to know. The franchise fee, which will likely be substantial, may be paid in installments.

It's widely believed that teams require tens of millions of pesos to run a competitive squad in the UFL. The travel to provincial areas for away games that this league would entail will likely increase expenses significantly.

Broadcast partners. ABS-CBN has been involved with the national league task force since its inception a couple of years ago. That is no guarantee, however, that they will be the main broadcast partner.

Gastanes said the league will offer a tender on the broadcast rights and any network is welcome to make an offer.

No possible corporate sponsors were mentioned in the meeting.

I believe the minimum for starting the league is 6 but they hope to have a lot more than that. It will cost more for clubs to operate in the Philippine national league(with all the traveling) than it does in the UFL, so only those with deep pockets will be able to compete. Their success will depend upon how many sponsors they can attract as well as the magnitude of the contract they will be receiving from television broadcasting companies. The fact that they plan to have a salary cap(like in the MLS) will ensure that they can control costs but will also end to the dominance of a few clubs. I think the average attendance will increase dramatically with this league compared to the UFL.

This sounds like a single entity system like the MLS(which includes a salary cap and a salary floor like most leagues in the US) but with the long term goal of incorporating promotion/relegation like in Europe and the rest of the football world. Because of the salary cap, this might have the unfortunate effect of reducing the competitiveness of Philippine clubs in AFC competitions as the strongest players will be distributed across the league rather than being concentrated in a few clubs. This might result in them modifying their rules eventually.
