Wanna bet this is another of those tactical games?

    Successful pass ratio: ~20%.

I say it's gonna be 4-3 to Paraguay after the Italians go up 3-0 by halftime....

just kidding - I think this is a good contender for a 0-0 draw unfortunately....

IMO, Paraguay is the South American team more likely to mess it up. They tend to be far too nervous on the big stage. They should be used to it by now, but they aren't.

The difference between bunkering and playing defensively is that a team bunkering hoofs the ball out of their area, a team playing defensively gets out of there playing.

I hope to see more of the latter from Paraguay, so far they are doing too much of the former.

First game in this WC finals under pouring rain.

The natural/artificial grass mix is going to get like linoleum.

There is no doubt that Paraguay is the Petrossian of football.

18' 0-0 Not quite back-and-forth, more like midfield-and-forth (into Paraguay's end). Italia has worked it to Paraguay's box top/endline about 15 times, Paraguay has barely passed to Italia's box top twice.

Pouring rain, neither team is faster than the other, so the killer long passes aren't there. Both teams playing solid defense, eventually disrupting all the medium passing build-ups.

Between the rain and the jabulani ball, both teams should just keep shooting and wait for the goalkeeper to slip up.

I'm hoping Paragruay draw first blood.

Italy playing from behind can be a thing of beauty.

22' 0-0 Paraguay rampage up the right sideline, cross along the box top -- bad touch at box top center off the heels of #19 Lucas Barrios(?), but deflects fortuitously into a huge void at box top left arc, where #17 Aureliano Torres charges in with steam and lines up a left-foot piledriver -- and hooks a foul ball most awfully, curling wide right.

Cardozo is second pair choice, with Benitez.

Valdez with Cabañas was the first choice, but now is Valdez with Barrios.

Roque is third choice, with Gamarra.

More than a game of football at times it seems a collection of 11 positional battles.

I know both sides are playing a cagy tactical battle with good defense at the centre, but I have to say I am yearning for the excitement of lawn bowling right now.

Terrible decision. Cardozo and Santa Cruz are the best strikers they have! And neither one is on the pitch! Cardozo was injured so he isnt 100% so he is understandable, but Santa Cruz? Not even Cabanas is on? Whats the coach thinking? If he wants any chance to beat the Azzuri, they have to be on the field. And the fact that Italy have been struggling, beating the, is very possible...

They may be great strikers with their clubs (Roque is not), but truth is they didn't work in the quals. At least not in accord with the plan.

And Paraguay, like Italy, is a super-tactical side, where what the forward does should be in synch with what the defense is doing.

These are two of the most chess-like teams to ever grace a football stadium.

Don't expect much excitement, unless you find a chess game exciting.
