Believe it or not, Ripley, the latest Paul Gardner column in Soccer America (7/29) actually praises MLS: "There is one very postive conclusion that MLS can draw, immediately, from the World Cup results: that the level of play in MLS is up to the standards of most pro leagues." And the latest ESPN Magazine (8/5) compliments US soccer: "... the Americans ... taught many of their countrymen why people all over the world obsess over this game. 'Are we there as a soccer country?' said coach Bruce Arena. 'Not yet, but we're getting there.' And fast."
I hope I'm right when I say that I think the full impact of our run through the World Cup won't be appreciated for another 10 years, but just to illustrate the immediate effect, I would point to Gardner's column. I must say was was shocked reading that. Positive words from Gardner about U.S. soccer. Who'da thunk?
