I thought about Bruce in goal but then I had visions of Penedo having to be brought in to play in the field with the ball at his feet and that sent shivers down my spine.
Calling it now. Rowe gets hurt and a hobbled Gordo tells Arena and Wolverton, "I got this", comes in and blocks a game saving PK.
Wasn’t snowshoes a reference to his incredibly slow? The shoe tying thing, if memory serves, was a game against Chivas where Landon(?) was on a fast break down the right and Gordon stopped to tie his shoes. Given Alan’s propensity for missing absolute sitters back then he would probably have missed anyway, but still … Amusingly enough I believe San Jose lost a game when both Alan and Lenhart(?) left the pitch to change their boots and didn’t know they had to wait for a break in play to reenter the field of play.
Yes! To me, the snowshoes nickname was fitting on two levels. The first being, as you mentioned, Alan isn't very fast, and the second being that he did miss absolute sitters back then, like he was trying to kick the ball with a pair of snowshoes on. Just referenced the snowshoes to keep with the shoe theme
My memory was that when he was the Galaxy under BA the first time, he spent a lot of time as the number 9, getting a lot of passes but then turning the ball over with his first touch.
I love this from today's training update: Gordon declared himself ready on Thursday http://www.lagalaxy.com/blog/beat/2...jury-update-alan-gordon-declares-himself-fit-
Can I tell you how much I love him? He's awesome. Also, buried in that article is that Penedo and Panama went 1-1 against Ecuador. He's in form right now. Will be interesting to see how he does at the Gold Cup. (I still can't believe how much his team let him down in WCQ).
Is there a player in Galaxy history to go from so loathed to so loved? The only other one that comes to mind is Kovalenko and he never acquitted himself in LA colors like Gordo has. It’s sort of Ruiz in reverse. Universally loved in his first stint, loathed while playing for other teams and sort of indifferent in his return stint.
A hundred years from now when we're all dead and buried, I wonder if Gordo will stand against the test of time. Certainly Highlander and LD will be there along with Cien and Cobi. EDIT: It'd be awesome if this forum was still around and our descendants can read our posts here...haha
Landon Donovan. The obnoxious SJE twerp was loathed. And look what happened when he straightened his life out.
Hahahahahaha he's such an LA institution I guess I've blocked out his warm up years in San Jose. In some alternate reality I plan on enjoying come the Singularity he was a Galaxy player from day one and we have 7 MLS Cups.
The thing with Gordon is....we all liked him on a personal level before....and then he frustrated the ever-loving $#@%&@% out of us because he never seemed quite able to put it all together. It was one of those things where you smacked your head and went "D'doh!" a couple of times a game when he played. It looked like he was never going to get all the pieces working together properly and that's why when he left we all kinda said "Good luck Alan, but goodbye....we can't take it anymore and you're never going to make it big." Then he got pissed OFF at being traded around, and somehow did the really-late bloomer thing. I suspect his scoring and celebrating against us was really a "lover scorned" kind of thing, and he really always wanted to come home.
And the best part is, he's become so synonomous with LA that I kinda feel like we stole that from them. They can't even root for their Championship player. It's a retrospective sucking of joy. I have to admit I've always been a fan of quality schaudenfreude.
