Looks like Miami is making player transfer news again... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...-dutch-international-attacker-steven-berghuis
Reno needs one point from the last 2 games to win the group if Sac wins out. We have 3 more wins than they do so own that tiebreaker outright now. Goal differential, tiebreaker 2, is strong for us, 21 to 7, and would take some results that neither team has shown a propensity for this year. Tiebreaker 3, goals scored, is also very much in our favor at 39 to 23.
From what I'm reading, that's backwards - a Phoenix player used a homophobic slur against a Loyal player (who is openly gay). Link: https://www.goal.com/en/news/san-di...ter-homophobic-slur/bv0m48in2jeb1x7ws0cu8pucx
Reno won group A and will face Los Dos in Reno in the first playoff game. Reno drew with Las Vegas. Reno can still have home field advantage through the playoffs with a win at Tacoma Saturday and San Antonio winning by no more than 4 goals more than Reno and Tampa Bay winning by no more than 6 goals more than Reno.
Thanks, I only saw the USL post on it and there was no info what side it was on. I just looked at the game report and it showed the last entry as the SD player getting a red card for abuse and foul language and surmised he was the cause of the game ending. He was the victim. I applaud SD walking off after the opening kick off of the second half.
San Diego Loyal forfeit another game, likely missing playoffs. Did not expect to see Landon Donovan making political statements with his soccer team.
If the USL doesn’t take strong action the Loyal might be forfeiting a lot of games. Amazing sacrifice for the Loyal to stand up for what’s right.
Abandoning two games in a row with zero tolerance is something we haven’t seen before. Especially in the context of likely giving up a shot at being champions by missing the playoffs. It’s a powerful statement and massive kudos to an owner that will support that.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of all this. The Phoenix player is vehemently denying he said what he is being accused of, so I hope there were other witnesses to this. It's admirable that San Diego made such a strong statement, but, in doing so you expect action or change. Maybe the league already has a strong policy place to deal with this type of situation, and so walking off might not accomplish much other than grabbing headlines for a day or two. Personally, I would rather see my team get angry and motivated if this happened and stomp the offending team into dusk! er...dust.
https://www.uslchampionship.com/news_article/show/1125649 Announced today, all players and staff will go through mandatory training. Along with increased sanctions for offenders.
For those who haven't watched ESPN's captioned video clip, the Phoenix coach says to Landon, "how long have you been playing soccer?!" and shrugs it off by saying that such slurs are part of the game.
https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...ntz-and-junior-flemmings-administrative-leave It appears that possibly Flemmings did use the slur and was heard by 3 teammates according to a commenter. The usual precautions apply to the comment of course but it does leave one wondering.
I have never been a Landon fan, but I was impressed at how he handled that. He's grown up a lot (I know he's older, but getting old doesn't mean you become more mature).
I was really shocked, because the SD Loyal had fought so hard to get into playoff contention. And, I was a little sad because they were actually playing very good-looking soccer. It sounded like it may have been Landon's idea to forfeit the game, but the players agreed even though they wanted to play. What the team did was certainly a game-changer. It would be great if coaches start voluntarily removing players for verbal racist or homophobic abuse that is not heard by the referee, but is corroborated by others.
Very few people will remember the score of that game in another month, but everyone is going to remember Landon's stance. And if it leads to real change in the league, that's monumental.
Here’s a great MLS or maybe even NFHS or college referee question! Maybe @bsman knows the answer? DCU vs ATL, and after HT, Ben Olsen subbed on Russell Canouse who was not on the game day roster. I’m not sure who pointed this out, but a few minutes In, the 4th Official tells CR Joe Dickerson. Then it takes >6 minutes for them to call PRO and find out what to do. In the end, Canouse left the field, and the ref team decided that since he was a non-existent player, a substitution had not been used. I didn’t see any cards issued, but shouldn’t Ben Olsen have been carded? Here’s an MLS write up on the incident
I hope it does, the game has no room for racist, bigot, neo-nazi assholes anymore. No matter who the player is, if they have any of those traits and views they need to get the F out.
