Media across the major sports leagues will no longer be allowed in the locker room due to the coronavirus outbreak: https://t.co/bXdJQARELh pic.twitter.com/pkNaGZRubx— Sports Illustrated (@SInow) March 9, 2020 Only a matter of time something will be done about the live events
Sure I guess. But it was perfectly placed and who the hell expects that? That was the longest successful free kick I remember ever seeing. Going by the field markings (those are 6 yard bands) it was 37-38 yards out.
Yes, but those empty seats are within the legal boundaries of the city of Los Angeles. So those are empty City of Los Angeles seats!
And sucked into #CCLFever yet again. I haven't learned. Will be watching this week (except for Montreal, though Thierry Henry on the road should be gold).
Rewinding just a bit, in the 96 playoffs at the Rose Bowl, Matt McKeon hit one against the Galaxy that was every bit of 40 yards. We used to call that "a bomb" but that term doesn't play as well these days. On a technical note, McKeon's wasn't a direct kick -- KC took a quick restart in midfield, touched it to him and then he hit it. For me, only DeRosario's famous free kick (also against Galaxy) is more impressive than that goal by McKeon.
OR maybe this was in 2000 or 2002 playoffs . . . (I can't remember and don't have time to figure it out right now)
I don't know if it is longer or about the same, but the one by Roberto Carlos of Brazil was more impressive because he hit it around the wall.
By my "grass band" calculation that was 36-37yrs, so maybe a yard or so short the Glesnes kick. But as you say Carlos' free kick is one of the all time greats - the bend he got on that ball ridiculous.
I didn't see McKeon's. But I remember Rosario's well, sent the vid to some friends at the time. Damn that was fine.
And Montreal starts with a loss...at home no less. Going to be a rough road in Honduras against that parked bus.
while searching for the Roberto Carlos goal, I found this other you tube video. I don't agree with several of his selections, there are a number by CR that are amazing. However, my favorite was ranked #5 by a keeper. I doubt that you will find a longer one unless it's in a blooper or a youth game or both.
Great goal but more of catch-them-off-guard trick play. I'm pretty sure there are some even longer ones like that. But if we are sticking to free kicks where the keeper and the wall have time to get set then Jakob Glesnes' is still the longest one I've seen (or at least remember seeing).
OK . . . McKeon's goal from the 2000 playoffs at the Rose Bowl is on this link at 1:27:25 and it was from about 35 yards, not 40 as I'd suggested . . . so it's not exactly Roberto Carlos, but still one of my favorite MLS goals of all time
Breaking: MLS is suspending its season until further notice because of the coronavirus, first reported by Sports Illustrated and confirmed to ESPN. pic.twitter.com/Qp3X2aJMvl— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) March 12, 2020
Article about Liga MX suspension pro/reg for the next 5 years. But what's more interesting is the last tidbit about MLS and Liga MX combining into a superleague??? How would it even work without a pro/reg system in place? There are already too many teams in MLS as is. Also, if pro/reg is put in place for the combined leagur, would all of the relegated teams end up being mostly MLS teams??? Lol https://www.yahoo.com/sports/liga-mx-suspends-promotion-relegation-222822536.html
Personally, I won't be spending much time contemplating an MLS LMX merger. Seems highly unlikely. Can't see why MLS would even consider that.
Agree unlikely. But in answer to your question, MLS would consider it for the same reason they consider anything: $$$. If they thought it would bring in the bucks, the "obstacles" would somehow be overcome. If not convinced of its return, the obstacles would be insuperable.
I don't understand why you think that there are already too many teams. I know that FIFA has a totally arbitrary rule limiting countries to a maximum of 20 first division teams. However, if you look at it by population, then the USA has more people than England, Scotland, Germany, France, Italy and Spain combined. Those countries have 110 first division teams. MLS also has teams in Canada. If you include the Netherlands which has about 55% of the number of people in Canada that's another 18 teams. On that basis, neither the current MLS team count of 26 nor the likely goal of 32 teams seems excessive.
Too many teams when looking from the perspective of keeping a single table and also from the perspective of a combined league. MLS currently has 26 teams, and will be upped to 30 teams by 2022 when the 4 remaining franchises come onboard fully. Looking at MLS by itself and it's structure, 30 teams is fine, but the SS is in name only and not really in spirit. Again, we all know who the real last SS winner was But if MLS and Liga MX were to combine, it'd be a 48 team league?? If yes, just wondering how it would work if keeping a 34-game season.
Again, I see no reason to keep to a European tradition of declaring the team at the top of the table as the champion. No one questions whether the winner of the super bowl is the NFL champion, ditto the winners of the NBA finals or the World Series. Even when the MLS schedule was balanced, everyone including the players treated the cup as being more important than the SS. Similarly, there is nothing special about a 34 game schedule. England plays a balanced 38 games. IMO, it's just the max games MLS can cram in along with the playoffs, exhibitions and other competitions. Certainly with 48 teams you could have 3 divisions of 16 teams with a 30 game balanced conference schedule and some number of interference competition. For example if each team in a conference played a home and home with the 2 teams that finish in the same place as them the previous season, that would be 34 games
