My box only works on the local channels and when I go to like the speed channel it plays for like 8 secs and says currently unavailable. Im pretty sure I have all the channels except the movie channels. Can you help?

Sounds like the box lost its programming for the packages you have. Call tech support and ask them to refresh it. they will walk you thru.
You can also try unplugging the box for about fifteen secs, then plug it back in and it should refresh itself.
Good luck and make sure ya have a six pack handy for the phone call.....it can take a while.

    What he said.

I'd also check to see if both green lights are on the box connected to your router.

What they said. I have FIOS as well, and like all technology that is relentlessly marketed by large corporations, it is not quite ready for prime time and you and I are the mass "beta testers."

You mean 'released' products never have problems?

I've reset cable modems and DirecTV receivers WAY more often than my FIOS router.

I don't think I've had to touch my FIOS equipment since I got it early last year and I can remember needing to reset my cable modem at least once every couple of months.

My son, who is a computer geek, gave me quite the exposition on the failings of the FIOS router to accommodate large amounts of data -- like playing data intensive computer games on-line (which no one plays and no one who plays would have any need for high-speed service:rolleyes:). I said, just replace the router with something else, he said "no" its all interconnected between internet access and the TV lineup. There is a work around to "splice in" a commercial router than can handle the extra data, but then your TV service goes all to hell (channels disappear, HD not available, etc.) The point is that the FIOS service lines can handle the large amounts of data and other routers can, but the router Verizon chose can't. That's what I mean by "beta test".

Ah so. Thanks for the explanation

I've never had my Verizon router fail. So far the service has been far more reliable than Comcast or DirecTV.

Perhaps I need to play online games a lot - you know, to stress test the system

There is also a consistant fault in the HD set top box. When using the full screen guide, if you select a channel using the OK button, the screen will freeze with the little picture from the guide in the upper right corner. This doesnt happen often, but when it does the box locks up, and button or remote input isnt recognized.
The fix is to unplug the power for 30 seconds and then replug and let the box reboot. After having this happen several times, and waiting on tech hold, I now just do it myself without calling tech. They are aware of it and seem not to care that it happens.

I thought that's what p0rn was for! At least, that's how we did things when I was a network engineer at an ISP. All those images and movies are way more data intensive than the transmission of game data.

Now, if only there were some way to combine the two...

Yeah, I forgot about that little thing too. I guess I view that type of glitch as an annoyance because it is intermittent and easily "fixed" (how many tech fixes involve -- "power off and then restart" -- as the solution?) The router's inability to handle the data is more than a glitch because you can't "fix" the problem.

It has definitely been done. I use the standard equipment and haven't stressed the network and that's with constant porn, games, and other stuff I'd rather not talk about. I have the original equipment and HD DVRs and haven't had freezing problems either. Maybe I have different hardware.

I may or may not know some people who are running several servers off of their FiOS lines as well. Of course they use their own Cisco equipment though.

I was annoyed that the US-El Salvador match showed up on ESPN instead of ESPN2 and messed up my recording while at the match. The program guide and descriptions suck, but that's not entirely their fault. I watched DC United play the LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl last week...

I'd like to read more information about that if you have it handy.
I play online games and have not ever run into anything I could blame on the router and my internet has been pretty darn close to fantastic since I got it. I've had very little problems with it and it's certainly far better than the comcast service it replaced.

The exact technical explanation I can't give. He did show me on something that was either "World of Warcraft" or some clone where the screen flickered, animation was choppy and the game was unplayable. He had not had that problem on cable or when he made the workaround on the FIOS router (that f**cked up the TV so he had to disconnect it).
