"OhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YOU SUCK ASSHOLE"
We've been getting feedback from some members and from some other fans that this is a hot topic. I sort of mind the language, but I really dislike it because so many other supporters clubs do it.
If "asshole" is now inappropriate, we are being way too ridiculous about being politically correct.
Between that and people criticizing "She fell over," we might as well just sit there silently... wouldn't want to run the risk of saying something and offending someone.
We should drop "You're a bastard referee" because not knowing who your father is isn't funny and is demeaning to people... give me a break...
We were talking in section 113 how we all kind of chuckle at it like little kids. We all mentioned how it hasn't gotten old and laugh when it happens.
I have no problems with any of our songs/chants that include profanities.
The problem I have with the goal kick chant is that it is so completely overused I feel like a hack doing it. I really wish we could come up with something new and original. As I said, it doesn't have to be "clean," just new.
Agreed. No problem with the language, just find it boring.
At the same time, guys, new and original is a great idea, but the execution sucks. As was said in a different thread on here, we're still having a hard time getting people to know Doop.... really? Doop is too hard for some people?
I'm all about originality, but I think trying to do everything different from every other comparable club would just backfire short term. If you guys are in 137, then yeah, I get it... but out in 135 on the fringe, stuff as simple as Vindaloo Wit (or Carnivale de Union) and Dale O aren't really catching. If we've attempted the real Vindaloo yet, that hasn't even made its way over.
I don't particularly care either way. But my family came Saturday and all loved it.
We did 5 minutes of the real Vindaloo on Wednesday...right out of half time and went back to it later...it looked from my position on the launch pad that at least 136 - 138 were trying to follow me.
Watching the game on tv from central PA, you guys sounded great!
However, I cringe every time I hear that chant.
Overused is an understatement.
Never got to us, but perhaps it was being drowned out by the incessant "Let's Get Rowdy" coming from the front of 135.
It's a bit overused and sort of childish, but I think its here to stay.
Yeah, I never heard Vindaloo either; I was looking forward to that one too. The problem must be 136 not being loud enough for us to catch on
Re: Asshole... I don't mind it, really, though it really wasn't necessary during the Celtic friendly (it will definitely be necessary for ManU though). Of course, there is the issue of younger children being around (not that I have an issue with corrupting children).
I feel like we could do something more original, but it seems it's stuck fast and will be difficult to change at this point.
it's too late to change it. Thats one of the few chants everyone gets behind.
I sat between a father with a young (maybe 7 year old) son, and a family with three young children (all less than say 12) and I cringed a little every time, but they didn't seem to mind.
I could take it or leave it myself.
Like most said, it isnt the language that bothers me its just how its so overused. What happened to saying UUUUUUUUUU-NION! on the goal kicks?
I don't mind the language, I just mind the unoriginality of it. We could probably come up with something better. i.e. ohhhhhh U-nion or the uuuuuuuuu-nion. I'd welcome anything different, even if it did still have foul language.
I'm not a fan of it with its use EVERYWHERE in MLS, but I'm all for it considering how great we make it sound. I find it ironic that while we are still having trouble getting on the same page, although I saw improvement while sitting in 2 different sections on Saturday, a chant involving the word "Asshole" is the one that Philly can get behind. As a wrestling fan 10-15 years ago, I was always amazed at the ECW chants coming out of Viking Hall, especially on PPV events. I'm still waiting for Califf's first on field fistfight, for the chants of "F**k em up Danny, F**k him up!" to come thru loud and clear.
139 needs a capo halfway up in the aisle. Someone who can stay in eye contact with Corey, Bolton, and Lozo and keep things moving. I tried in the first half from the low end of C in 138, and many in 139 were taking cues from me, although we still need remedial rhythm lessons.
I have been traveling the last three games. The two games that were televised (why no Union-Celtic, FSC!!!), it came through loud and clear, so much so that JP was trying to talk over it.
I love it. I realize that every team does it. But we also use many chants and songs that other teams do as well.
I also think we need to use the Wu-Tang AO chant somehow, "Blue and Gold ain't nothin' to F@#% wit'" or you can change it to "mess wit" for the faint of heart or care about the children.
Good stuff and keep up the good work.
136 was playing around with a few movie quotes as chants that were really fun and the "ha-ooo, ha-ooo, ha-ooo" chant we did from the movie 300 seemed like it could be applicable here. Done together it would be loud and intimidating while also a little funny... and it's a battle cry so that's good too. It'd essentially be the same we're doing now except after the ball is kicked people yell "ha-ooo, ha-ooo, ha-ooo"
I would be more worried if we didn't seem to be improving every game so I think eventually 135 will get in line, even with the "Let's get Rowdy" dudes. I make it a point to try to watch 136 and to catch the song so I can start singing it. It has been difficult at times to figure it out but I'm on the ass end of 135 with most of the closer seats to 136 who just sit all game and don't participate.
On the goal kicks I have been shouting UUUUUUUUUUUNNN- IIIIIIOOOOOOONNN but I think it is a moot point now. Asshole is here to stay.
I dislike it, but mostly because it's overused and unoriginal. It does sound great, but we could come up with something more unique. We should be using friendlies, tailgates and pre-match to practice the originals over and over again (although the Manchester United friendly is now going to be nationally televised). I wouldn't shy away from the originals just because they don't a have a short term payoff. If that's the standard, we're just going to turn into every other MLS club. A mix of old and new is good, and you have to give the new ones time to catch on. It won't necessarily happen in the course of one match.
As for keeping the sections together, I wish we had a platform between 138 and 139. I'd also suggest that we give sections roles in those callback chants like "Phila!" "Delphia!" For example, odd numbered sections chant "Phila" and even numbered sections chant "Delphia."
It's the one chant that people actually say in my section (outside of supporters), and they laugh every time they hear it. I've also heard people say in my section it's their favorite chant.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of it and think it's overused, but I think for the non Sons of Ben members, it should stay.
I'm in the middle on this one. It's kinda blah....but people in the main seating areas seem to laugh and enjoy it everytime we do it. (I was in 130 for the San Jose game and by the end, the entire section was joining in with the SOBs). I think it may be too late to change it because I'm not sure how you can get people to stop yelling asshole when they clearly enjoy doing it so much.
