there's no other to put it: he's been the worst player on tour, by a distance. i still want to see him next to bailly before completely panicking.
By George, I think you're right. Yesterday's abomination was particularly galling. There was no need for the challenge, which could have easily resulted in a straight red. Nasty and brutish, the foul in the box created the only real chance on goal for Real (apart from the free kick which was never going to beat the world's top keeper on the near post) on the day and put us into a pk shootout, during which "the Iceman" didn't exactly acquit himself brilliantly. Victor must have been amazing in Portugal but he's clearly not ready for prime time in England, so let's hope Phil and/or Chris are up to the job to start the season. But both of those two have stagnated in their development and there are still questions about the left back situation until we see what Shaw has in him when he returns. All the more reason to address the holding mid situation soon.
Exactly, he's been poor so far, it's been very obvious, but I'll wait before judging him as a bust after a little over 3 halves of football in preseason. As mentioned elsewhere, he's the one guy in our defense who has no familiarity with anyone else, nor has he had the benefit of a consistent partnership with anyone yet either. And we know those things can take time to develop. Bailly coming in and hitting the ground running the way he did was incredible (and really is a credit to him) but it's still more the exception than the rule. Lindelof may need a while longer to establish himself and find his bearings, but we've got options to carry the load in the meantime and coupled with Rojo's absence for the immediate future, simply means we should not be in a hurry to jettison either one of Jones or Smalling. That can wait until Jan at the earliest, as far as I'm concerned, possibly even next summer.
Sure, one never wants to judge a player prematurely, but the opposition he has faced so far is nowhere near the level of opposition United are going to face starting August 8. He's looked very poor and there are no excuses for that. We can't cite fatigue or the inevitable mix and match of pre-season play. No one is declaring Lindelof to be a bust but based on what we've seen so far from Lindelof I seriously doubt anyone would argue today we were wise to pass over much better CBs who were reasonably gettable.
I agree and there is a school of thought that stupid errors are the easiest things to fix (especially for a player who is not known for being dumb or boneheaded), so we'll see how that is remedied in time...

Actually, acceptable. Some buys are for the present, such as Matic, and some buys are for the future, as appears the case with Lindelof. I'm not sold on him at all yet, but it's quite acceptable to let "The Iceman" get acclimated to the club and the league. After all, the pressure for playing for United is unlike anything on the planet except for Real and Barcelona. Maybe Bayern. He'll get his chances to close out settled games over the next month or so. And we'll see where it goes for him. But on the basis of the known facts, Jones won't have much to worry about.

I still don't see any particular special quality in Lindelof but he definitely will make a solid squad man in CB rotation for us over the next few seasons. There's nothing about The Iceman that suggests he'll surpass Bailly. Jones so far this season is vastly superior to anything I've seen from Lindelof even on YouTube. Rojo is still only 27 and he's just better than Lindelof, full stop. And although any assessment of Tuanzebe could be fairly described as premature, Axel looks absolutely beastly for a 19 year old. And this is all before we even talk about Fosu-Mensah, who by his early 20s could be better than all the names mentioned above -- and IMHO could by his mid 20s become an all-worlder. Lindelof...we'll see how far he develops. But the thing is this: with Bailly, Jones, Rojo (all in their mid 20s) easily better than Lindelof it's hard to see Lindelof reaching whatever his potential is at Old Trafford.
Lindelof is still very young and has time on his side. The one area where he has the edge naturally over all the other CBs at the club right now is with his ability and comfort with the ball at his feet. If he can get his defensive game on par (or anywhere close at the very least) to Jones and Rojo, he'll have a very good chance to become Bailly's long term partner at CB. The number of CBs currently at the club works in his favor in the sense that there's no need to rush him at all. And Jose has plenty of time to work on him and get him up to speed.
I'll be interested in seeing whether Lindelof actually takes over for Matic down the road. Lindelof's supposed strength -- passing -- isn't that much better than Bailly or Jones and he's certainly not as tough as either in the tackle. But if his defensive game progresses and he's actually the ball-playing defender his resume says he is, perhaps he'll evolve into our first choice defensive mid over the next 3-4 seasons. We shall see.
