    yep good question...
even some of the supporters ( yankees) shout the yankee doodle as a support song.
maybe becaus america was quite popular in the eighties in france, when most of the ultra groups where created in marseille.
however, i think there is not an obsession about the american culture, marseilles has its own history and culture (the city was founded in 600 Before jc).
Ithink the "yankees" group is a reference to the oppositions between the north (yankees) and the south ( ultras, south winners) curves of our Velodrome stadium(the south winners often show some confederate banners like this:[IMG]. this reference to the american civil war highlights the fair opposition that consists in making much more noise and fireworks than the opposite curve, and to shout and reply to each other just like HERE).

for the dodgers, i think it's just a lack of imagination^^

As an OM fan in the United States, I'm frustrated by this team. Are they good or mediocre? I just have this fear that they will finish 4th and end up with nothing at all. Is Luyindula rubbish or good? Why has it taken this long for Battles to play in the starting lineup? Is Barthez done?

They will finish 2nd or 3rd and get into the Champions League I would bet on it.

Lyon are losing to Caen, 1-0 in the 85th minute. Good news for L'OM

It seems that we won’t make it against Saint-Etienne. :(

You can't be frustrated by them in 2005! I had a post like yours in 2004!

*What does everyone think about Barthez's Casablanca case, how it will be handled - and how's the new FFF president? Simonet just retired?

OM have really turned their season around, they will midtable for quite a while and now they are 2nd. You have to be thrilled with their current form. I know Lyon is a 1 side wrecking crew and I really don't think anyone in France is better than them, but OM is competing.

Tomorrow's match vs. St. Etienne (sp?) is a HUGE match for OM. I can't wait to watch it.

That looks like a bastardised version of the San Siro.

What is the status of the Velodrome? Can it stage UEFA finals or not?

I would like to see a European cup final held in France.

with this kind of configuration, after the upgrade, there would be 80 000 seats.
this shoul be enough to hold a uefa finale i think ( it's suitable for a world cup final ).(better than monaco ;)
nethertheless, i wouldn't use the word 'bastardissed" for such a beautiful jewell ^^
    WE love our stadium :)
this version of the project is far better:
that would be fuxxing loud down there...

The velodrome needs to be less open because the chants gone with the wind,it would be very noisy with a roof

The stadium as it is right now is big enough to host a European final. Maybe the lack of a roof is why they havent got one yet.

    Awesome, isn't it?
That's their current field, the Velodrome, modernized and
covered. From what I read, they are talking about a 2007
completion date, but seems everyone doubts it could be
    done this way, this fast.
Would cost a fortune, to start with (in the 200/ 300
millions euros range for increased capacity + roof).
Problem seems to be where exactly financing would come
from ( the stadium belongs to the city). All in all, a complex
project, technically and financialy. I liked that bit from someone
    at Marseille's city-hall:
"La couverture est importante, mais on a d'autres priorités :
le métro, le tramway, les crèches, les écoles.Et puis, il ne pleut
    pas si souvent que ça...."
--->" To build a roof (for the stadium) is important, but we also
have other priorities: the subway, tramway, kindergartens, schools.
And then, it doesn't rain that often..." :D

But I love this stadium and this would be an awesome
    improvement/ upgrade.

OM vs ASSE should be an awesome game. Two of the most popular French teams the atmosphere at the stadium should be tremendous.

yep nothing is done yet but if the project goes to his end, this should look something like these pics.

y'oure right fishbe, the upgrade is to be done before the rugby world cup 2007 host by france ( 1/2finals and the 3rd place match at the velodrome--->all rugby fans and even the players would have prefered a final in marseille, but in france paris means everything...)
for the financement, they talk about private funds. the building of restaurants, shops, movie theatre etc... inside the four corners towers(8levels each one) could be a way to raise money....futre will tell

    Merci

    Thanks.

My friend also suggested that it had something to do with the role of hip-hop (which is apparently big in Marseille, possibly due to the immigrant population?) in the city. And since hip-hop mostly grew out of America, that's where the influence came from.

Yup. I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. In fact I get the feeling that Marseille is somewhat like Barcelona - it represents a very strong regional (or this case, civic I guess) nationalism. Most people in Catalonia would consider themselves Catalans rather than Spanish; is it the same in Marseille (Marseille native before French native)?

Btw, what are the words the song from that clip?

yep exactly like barcelona and the catalan, you 're right. That's the reason why barcelona is rather more popular than madrid in marseille...

    the words are quite simple:

    Aux ARmes....(take your weapons)
    .....bis
Nous sommes les Marseillais ( we are the marseillais)
    .....bis
Et nous allons gagner ( and we are going to win)
    ....bis
    Allez l'OM (Go L'om!)
    ...bis
a simple message for the opposite team ^^, the impress comes from the stereo effect when you're in the stadium, and that the two curves answear to each other...
