One of the largest restoration projects in the country is happening in downtown Oklahoma City.

The $275 million First National Center renovation will be completed in the fall of 2021.

The 89-year-old bank building at Robinson and Park will house 193 apartments and 146 hotel rooms as a Marriott Autograph property.

The bridge construction cost $6 million; it catches the eye of travelers on I-40 crossing OKC from east coast to west coast.

Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine update and 2,000 seat Roman Catholic
Basilica under construction in South Oklahoma City.
    Project cost: $40 million

Archdioceses of Oklahoma City (includes Tulsa & Little Rock) have $85 million in pledges for capital improvements building the Basilica and renovations for all churches in the OKC area.
The structure can be seen from I-35 south at the vicinity of 89the right before you enter Moore.

Upon completion of construction, the Basilica will be the largest Roman Catholic Church in Oklahoma with pews to accommodate 2,000.

Archdiocese to Break Ground for Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in November

The groundbreaking for the shrine is set to take place at 3 p.m. on November 3 in Oklahoma City.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The shy and unassuming Blessed Father Stanley Rother, a missionary priest and martyr from a farming family, would likely be surprised to learn that the largest Catholic Church in Oklahoma will bear his name.

On Tuesday, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City announced that it will be breaking ground for the Blessed Stanley Rother shrine in November. The $40 million shrine will seat 2,000 and be the largest Catholic church in the state once it is complete.

The project is the “signature element” of the archdiocese’s first-ever capital campaign, the archdiocese told Oklahoma News 4.

Besides the main church, the shrine site will include a prayer chapel devoted to Bl. Stanley Rother, where he will be buried, religious education and ministry classrooms, and a museum and pilgrim center with artifacts and stories about Rother’s life.

“Padre Francisco”, as Rother was affectionately called at the mission in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala where he served, was shot and killed by masked gunman early in the morning on July 28, 1981, in the midst of the country’s civil war. Rother had refused to call for help, not wanting to endanger anyone else at the mission.

The five-foot-ten, red-bearded missionary priest was from the unassuming town of Okarche, Okla., where the parish, school and farm were the pillars of community life. He went to the same school his whole life and lived with his family until he left for seminary.

In June 2015, the Theological Commission of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints voted to recognize Father Stanley Rother as a martyr. Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom in early December 2016, and on Sept. 23, 2017, Rother was beatified at a Mass in Oklahoma City.

“The groundbreaking for the shrine will be a significant moment in the life of the Church in Oklahoma and for the broader community,” Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City told News 4.

“The shrine is being built to honor Blessed Stanley Rother, an Oklahoma original and the first U.S.-born priest and martyr ever beatified. It will be a place of pilgrimage where the faithful will come from near and far to honor Blessed Stanley at his final resting place and to seek his intercession for their many needs. It will be a place of welcome, serving all people.”

The groundbreaking for the shrine is set to take place at 3 p.m. on November 3 in Oklahoma City.

    Telling the whole story

Robbie Kienzle, OKC’s Arts Liaison, said the team will be meeting soon to discuss concepts, and she hopes the knowledge gathering and placement of the educational materials will be finished by the end of 2022.

Working on the project has helped Kienzle educate herself on the history behind the land run and how it affected Native American tribes, both those indigenous to Oklahoma and those that were relocated from other parts of the country, which is the team’s ultimate goal.

“A lot of people in Oklahoma haven’t been taught the orchestration of events that led up to the land run,” Kienzle said. “Certainly, those settlers that participated in the land run gained a lot. But what about everybody else? What about everybody that was already living in those unassigned lands? What about all the people that were relocated here?--Oklahoman, July 4, 2021

The Centennial Land Run Monument commemorates the opening of the Unassigned Land in Oklahoma Territory with the Land Run of 1889. The frenzied energy and emotion from one instant during the run is captured in bronze by artist Paul Moore. It is one of the world’s largest bronze sculptures featuring 45 heroic figures of land run participants, frozen in motion as they race to claim new homesteads.

The original cost, shared by city, state, and federal funds, was some $6 million. This series of bronze sculptures stretches 365 feet.

The proposed Multipurpose Stadium that will accommodate 8,000 initially can be
    expanded beyond 20,000 seats.

The $350 million OKANA Resort & Water Park development is under construction in Oklahoma City just south of the Oklahoma River.

This resort will include a 404 room hotel on 100 acres of prime land on Oklahoma City's Riverfront. Phase I of the resort will occupy 40 of the 100 acres. The 100 acres of land what given to the tribe for development and finishing the First American Museum (FAM), a $175 million Smithsonian museum in the heart of OKC.

The Chickasaw Nation has invited Oklahoma City to construct the Multipurpose Stadium which can be expanded by 20,000 for Major League Soccer to be built on the 100 acre tract.

The Tribe is working with the Oklahoma City Zoo on a partnership to build an Aquarium on the property as part of Phases II & III.
