I would assume that they wouldn't officially transport the name "Whitecaps" until the USL Whitecaps are no longer (so, after next season).
But the Seattle Sounders FC name was announced while the USL-1 Seattle Sounders were preparing for their last season...wonder what's going on?
but FWIW, the sounders name wasn't an official option, but overwhelmingly won out with the write-in votes. granted, i do hope they keep the whitecaps name (since it's part of "the city's DNA - garber's words, not mine) and jersey style. nice ...
Commish also announced that 2012 is when the 2011 rejects will get to try again...should spark some hope in ATL, MIA, and Montreal (as well as ease up Portland, STL, and Ottawa)
I think they will do what Seattle did and decide on a name at a later date, even though we and they all know it will probably be Whitecaps. Side note - Garber said 2 expansion teams for 2012.
It has to be Whitecaps! : ) As a Sounder fan since 1975. I am thrilled to hve you in the league. You guys are going to be huge! I think your season ticket sales will be right on par with us and your city will generate the same buzz, perhaps even greater than Seattle. The Sounders FC Nation is happy for you and your great fans. Having you in the league is great for us and visa versa! Congratulations Vancouver, this is one of the greatest weeks for soccer in this country ever! You guys are going to have a lot of fun watching your team come together. Enjoy the ride! Re: MLSnet.com confirms Vancouver I know its really early and not all that important but does anyone know if it's gonna be grass or turf? It's supposed to have a retractable roof, but i wonder about the pitch.
Re: MLSnet.com confirms Vancouver I just figured that they would have worked with you guys to be part of such a historic announcement.
In 2010 or early 2011 they'll probably do a name/kit launch thing with supporters like they did in Seattle.
Re: MLSnet.com confirms Vancouver More than likely the FIFA-sanctioned stuff like at BMO. Hey, if it's good enough for Spartak, it's good enough for Canadians, right? Way to go Van-city! As a TFC supporter, I'm already stoked for our first official MLS all-Canadian derby! It's gonna be MASSIVE!!!
Re: MLSnet.com confirms Vancouver BC Place will have artificial turf. The Waterfront Stadium, if/when it gets built, will have natural grass.
