It looks to me as though Gomez's disallowed was as well. But, beggars won't be choosers, for now! Happy, happy, joy, joy!
What the F was Nicol complaining about when he got escorted off? (just after Emilio's first.) Surely he couldn't be debating that the goal was offsides, what with John deep in the corner. What, was he complaining because the obvious, blatant foul that John committed on Bennie wasn't called and allowed the Flow of Play (aka "Nicol's Bane") to continue? Positives: Gros getting back on the field. Jaime getting a goal in the run of play. Bennie getting some rest. Emilio notching two more in the golden boot race. And whoever it was (Burch, maybe?) who made a 80-yard run up the left sideline and then made the beautiful cutback pass/cross right onto Emilio's noggan for the fourth goal. Negatives: Vanney losing Twelman in the box on crosses not once but twice. Fortunately Ralston botched the shot on the second instance or it could have been tighter than it was.
According to the post-match report, he thought Ben fouled Khano Smith at the outset of the play that led to the goal.
I do believe that was B.Carroll. It was amazing. I was scared Heaps was going to take him out. Given some of the trash his boys got away with, he's not really in a position to complain. I've never understood why a team with such clear talent feels the need to play that way... and that is just one of the reasons I FREAKING HATE NE.
It was sweet to watch him go by Heaps and deliver the assist that closed the game out. We got to let Heaps know how much we loved him from 137.
As someone who makes it a daily ritual to roast Brian Carroll, that play was sick and something I've been waiting to see from him. In all honesty, when he gets moving, there are few players in this league who can catch him. Well done BC, well done....
Exactly, Smith fouled Olsen and they both fell down. Smith stayed on the ground complaining while Olsen got up, received a pass and laid on the goal. Wonderful! The only change that needs be made is Boswell for Vanney, at fault more than once and shown up on Twellman's goal. Everyone else was fantastic.
I *KNEW* we were going to win. When Ben Olsen came on in the 2nd half, I said to my friends... " I feel a Ben Olsen Goal coming". His first attempt was not to be, almost, but not quite. Then, a few minutes later, OLSEN!!!!!!!!. Nuff said.
Um, sorry to burst your bubble, but Olsen only had an assist. Emilio had the goal. Great assist, though.
Yeah well, it happened so fast.... Hey, I had a feeling and I was at least half right! We did it none the less!
By his standards, he did fine. Really. Didn't decide the game for once, although how Shalrie Joesph got through the game without a yellow card is beyond me.
Yes. They changed the rules just for this game so that it's actually legal to kick the shit out of someone from behind, if you are wearing a New England jersey.
Ya know, I think it's probably about time we stop ripping Vanney. Yes, he lost Twellman a few times, but last time I checked Twellman has racked up over 80 career MLS goals. He does that to everybody. He moves off the ball better than any player this league has ever seen. Oh by the way, since we've traded for Vanney we are only 8-1-3 while outscoring our opponents 24 -10 and led our team to a probable Supporters Shield title. And to be more accurate, since he's been healthy (he came to United bothered with an ankle injury) the team is 5-0-1 outscoring the opponents 16-5 Christ, I just don't how much more evidence some people need to see that he is a very good defender who has taken the backline and given it the balance and discipline it has needed. Facundo Erpen in a million years couldn't have been as stabalizing a factor as Vanney has been. Just get off his jock already and enjoy what this team has done since he's been in a United uniform. Rant over.
I only saw the first half and a bit of the second on telefutura. When I left home we were down 2-1 and looking shaky and unsure like we do when the cage gets rattled. So the highlight of this for me was that we found a way to get our confidence back and win the thing. This team is showing a dynamicism that last years team couldn't begin to approach. They learn through the season what it takes to win. They overcame their early poor road form and have found a way to win on the road now they're finding ways to come back and win after their confidence gets rattled a bit.
Here's his bitching rant in the post-match quotes. This from a man whose team got 80% of the calls today. NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL On the play on the sideline between Smith and Olsen: "I don't know if he (the referee) saw it (a foul), but if he did see it, are you kidding me? What are we supposed to do? We can set up to play against a team, but we can't set up to play against the officials."
It was a match of extremes - some of the ugliest goals you will ever see and some of the finest. Ugliest: 1. The scrum in front of our net that was allegedly a Heaps goal. 2. Jaime's goal which tied it 2-2. Finest: 1. Twellman's volley after chest-trapping the ball away from the net (and Vanney.) 2. Emilio's second goal, after the fabulous run and serve by Carroll. As for the others: did anyone else think Fred might have been slightly offside on the first goal? The MLS Net video seems to confirm it, but it isn't totally definitive. And do you think Emilio really intended to misdirect Christian's shot (our third goal)? It looked like the ball pinged off his foot by mistake. As for Carroll, his run and service was as fine an individual effort as I can remember. Blessedly, he wasn't just trying to ice the match at 3-2; but had a notion of adding to the score. Buy that man a new sweater vest!
How that man can complain when Joseph made it through the game without an ejection, hell without a card, is simply beyond me. As for Jaime's goal, I actually thought it was pretty sweet... not the cleanest set up, but still. he got the ball, waited for Reis and serves it in over him... I liked it.
