Aren't they building a combined hockey/soccer arena in Moscow? Ah, here it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VTB_Arena. Actually, something like this would have to be bigger for use by the Isles/Pigeons: the hockey arena only seats 12-15K, and the soccer capacity is around 27K...
The third bid on Belmont by Blumingfeld development group withdraw because the fix is in for the Islanders to win bid. Only if the Islanders leave enough land for a soccer stadium is there any chance NYCFC ends up at that location. Or unless the Nets continue to subsidize the Islanders.
Are there any "ships" on Newtown Creek (not Newton's Creek)? I wonder whether the tallest vessels that go in there are tugboats towing barges.
I don't think Newtown Creek is used by cruise ships. It used to be used to dump the city's raw sewage and industrial acid form the local refineries. Before 1950, bulk-oil storage facilities near the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Huron Street were spilling petroleum in amounts that were eventually more than the Exxon Valdez oil spill. An underground explosion at the same corner added to the problem. BP, Chevron, and ExxonMobil have since removed half of the spill, about 12,000,000 US gallons (45,000,000 l; 10,000,000 imp gal), from the creek and surrounding area, selling the oil that was removed. In 1973 the Peter van Iderstine plant which had been turning butcher's discards and at least one 10-ton elephant into fertilizer, animal feed, and glue since 1855 was charged with contaminating the creek with animal fats. The plant closed two years later but the smell of burning animals lingered. In 1978, a United States Coast Guard helicopter on a routine patrol discovered the Greenpoint oil spill, a discharge that lasted another 30 years and spilled in total three times the oil of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. In the early 2000s, during the construction boom, construction companies dumped concrete slurry into the creek.
https://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/belmont-park-redevelopment-islanders-soccer-1.15370380 If the Islanders have until January to opt-out of their 25-year lease with Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, then does the Empire Development group need to decide ASAP on which bid to approve? NYCFC or Islanders? When I read these articles I get the impression NY State is in no rush to approve any of these proposals unless proper bribes have been paid.
Sources have confirmed to me that the Islanders' bid to build a new arena at Belmont has been accepted by NY state, beating out a bid from NYCFC. An official announcement is scheduled for tomorrow.— Ian Thomas (@byIanThomas) December 19, 2017
