http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/05/sports/soccer/05soccer.html Is it the role of the media to report news or to create news?
Slow news day -- column inches to fill. However, never underestimate the ability of New York teams to get the "breaks" when it comes to players. Also, AEG is selling DCU and Anschutz may want to protect his investment and move Adu to New York as part of the deal.
Don't let their words confuse. AEG is not 'selling' DCU. MLS is getting another partner, who will then operate the DC United division of MLS corporation. Anschutz investment is not at risk.
what a waste of ink. i guess we see how far soccer has come in america when the new york times prints a column that says, "gee, wouldn't it be great if the metrostars got freddy adu?"
Is Jack Bell the new nom de plume of Jason Blair? Still, it's a pretty sad sight when the only way the Metros can get into the NY Times is by linking themselves to Adu. So is the President and General Manager of the Metros saying that he'd start over Guevara and Djorkaeff for playing time in his desired position? I wonder what either of those men have to say about that.
"The MetroStars would love nothing more than to have Freddy Adu," Lalas said in a telephone interview last night. "He would certainly play in New York. It's evident that he loves competition and wants to play, and we are certainly a team that would provide him with time on the field. I would love nothing more than for him to get fed up with D.C. Right now, I think the situation is a little like a Bruce Lee movie without a fight. He's got the star power, but there hasn't been the payoff." I guess MLS has no anti-tampering rules??? Oh, the joys of single entity.
I'm guessing it's a misprint and should read: "Lalas acquired two players with pizza - Tony Meola and Ryan Suarez and a California style . . . ."
This is absolute quality sh!t Look, I'm not sayin that Adu should go here or there, or that he's even GOING to go anywhere. However I love the fact that we now have characters in our league's front offices. Lalas can become the MLS equivalent to Jose Mourinho here...and I'm all for that. It creates press and interesting storylines for the league. Forza Lalas!
I love this. Columnists should be speculating, throwing things out there. That's what other sports have. B
What would AEG's investment in Adu consist of? His salary can't possibly count 100% against the United cap, What contractual agreement would Adu have with AEG rather than with MLS?
This is why newspapers are considered a "medium:" they are neither rare nor well done. It's total crap.
I needed a good laugh this morning <recovering from a long weekend> and boy if NY/NJ knows how to do anything its provide DC fans with a good laugh. I'll believe it when I see it, and we aren't gonna see it so I say... Nothing to see here, move along move along.
So we want more coverage of the league, but only if it's coverage we approve of? Bah. Idle speculation is the driver of discussion for fans of pretty much every sport in this country, whether it's trade rumors or why someone is slumping or who likes who. This is awesome that it's moving off of Big Soccer and into major newspapers.
If Alexi Lalas would like to trade Amada Guevara for Freddy Adu, I say to Kevin Payne: take it! Fred has stated explicitly and without doubt that he will be leaving MLS at the first opportunity for the green grass of Europe. Between today and that departure day, Guevara would be far and away the better player in MLS the next two seasons. This is a no brainer. Tim
