Yep, keep the logo, just keep the name simple - Gotham FC.

I like the name, but for some reason I do not really like it for a NWSL team, it is a little on the dark side. But, I can live with it.

I wonder if it will morph into GFC -- sort of along the lines of PSG.

It reminds me of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They will eventually drop one or both of the NY/NJ, but maybe there was something that made them do this in the short term.

Yeah have Gotham represent both NY/NJ without having to add that.

They should call themselves the Gotham Knights! Oh whenever at home when the game is about to start, they should turn on the Bat symbol!

I don't care about anything else, as long as the players, from now on, always wear a cloak while they play. :ninja:

FWIW, this was how a lot of people reacted to "Thorns" when they were first announced. ;)

I'm sure NWSL will grow into "Gotham" in the same way

How were people reacting first time Thorns was introduced?

Uh I don't know how that wasn't clear - I quoted that post because my point was cpt's reaction to "Gotham" was the same as most people to "Thorns"

To spell the reaction out: kinda fun, but didn't sound like a WoSo team name, as people were used to it. Too rough around the edges, as it were.

The team plays in NJ and is co-owned by the governor of NJ (Phil Murphy who is up for reelection this year). Unless they would try to claim a Gotham alone name refers to nearby Newark and not NYC, the last thing Murphy needs is negative press if his team gets a sole New York sounding name but still playing in NJ. New Jerseyans are annoyed that the football Giants have been playing in New Jersey for years now but are still named the New York Giants. .

Also definitely worth mentioning: the NWSLPA has begun CBA negotiations with NWSL. While NWSL has recognized the NWSLPA before, I'm not sure if that was in official or unofficial capacity. Earlier this week was the first time the NWSLPA had a full-time executive director, with Meghan Burke announced for the role; Yael Averbuch and Brooke Elby were previous presidents.

Summary for those of us unsubscribed?

    =EDIT=
Nevermind, found it on SI as well

It's this year's Women's ICC, and Houston will be the fourth team. It's the first time the Women's ICC hasn't featured Man City or the Courage.

I bet the ICC people are a bit bummed they didn't get to expand to 8 teams this year, but with pandemic still in full swing, I guess even 4 teams was probably tough to get done.

Should be 8. This tournament is in August, by that time most are vaccinated.

Vaccines are far from the only concern.

Not to mention that event planning in general takes time and lots of contingencies.

I’m kinda of surprised that there’s no WSL clubs, but guessing their balanced enough whereas Lyon & Barca are screaming for better competition due to the lack of in their own leagues.

Got to wonder too with so many of our best players headed to Europe, can the NWSL compete anymore with those two giants?

Yeah usually it’s Man City. We will see if they are still interested. Or maybe Chelsea.

IMO it’s still competitive. Even North Carolina lost a couple of games in 1 season even when dominant so other teams were good enough to give a team that has beaten Man City and Lyon, teams where they only lost like 1 game or just a draw in their own league.

NC might be an good example; since then they’ve lost Mewis, Dunn, Dahlkemper, Hinkle, Sheridan. So can they still compete with the likes of Lyon?

"So many of our best" isn't all that factual; sure, some have gone over, but many of "the exodus" last year were loans that are or will be over. Plus, Lyon should be losing two of its best to NWSL by the time the tournament happens...

"Still interested" is impossible, the tournament is set for this year.

Who knows. I do know that North Carolina wasn’t dominant in the Challenge Cup even when they had all the players there in the team. Including Dunn, Mewis and Dalhkemper.

Nothing is impossible. SBC Argentina was a replacement for Japan at last moments notice.
