Sue Bird and Eli Manning have joined the ownership group for Gotham FC, with a reported club valuation of $40m(!!!) https://www.cbssports.com/wnba/news...in-njny-gotham-fc-ownership-group-per-report/
It could also indicate where they are going to live once their careers are done. Sue's signing another contract with the Storm was a surprise and Rapinoe isn't bound to have much longer left in her playing career.
Yeah, Sue Bird is a New Yorker. She was born and raised there. No surprise she is looking at a future with Gotham rather than Seattle.
Also remember that the Reign are owned by OL. Not sure they're the type of primary owners to welcome ownership by committee like LA, NJY, CHI etc. have done.
I guess Sue and Megan, on the one hand, and Clarence and Ginni, on the other, have at least one thing in common.
Not as scary as this seemed at first glance: EXCLUSIVE: The @NWSL has told its players that they could be out money after cryptocurrency platform Voyager Digital, one of the league’s biggest partners, filed for bankruptcy earlier this month.https://t.co/nUi0QJW4YA— Sportico (@Sportico) August 1, 2022 The article is behind a paywall, but the money gone isn't payroll, but some kind of cut the sponsor was going to pay to players.
Yeah, my original impression was that the Voyager things was akin to bonuses/prize money/etc. Still sucks to not have it, but damn crypto was a bad idea in the first place.
Yeah, maybe this is a warning sign to other leagues not to have a Cryptocurrency sponsor. The WNBA currently has one in Coinbase that they just signed a contract to. Too late to pull out?
Chris Henderson's Instat ratings of the best players in the NWSL this year (as of July 31). I don't quite agree that Lavelle ranks so high. 29 - Pugh 22.5 - Lavelle 20 - DeMelo, Kornieck 18 - V. Pickett, 17.5 - Huerta 17 - S. Smith, Sugita 16 - Gilles 15 - Fox 13 - Morgan, van Egmond 12.5 - Daly, Rodman
A statistic I would like to see receive more attention is "chances created" which is the addition of assists and key passes. Key passes are those which result in a shot, whether said shot is a goal or not. The stat gives a nod especially to midfielders who may not score much, but have a important role in creating chances. So, here's the top 10 NWSL players for 2022 so far (source FotMob): l. DeMelo (Louisville) 38 2. M. Sanchez (Houston) 26 2. Fishlock (OL) 26 4. Huerta (OL) 24 4. Endo (Angel City) 24 6. McCaskill (Angel City) 23 7. A. Sanchez (Wash) 22 8. K. Mewis (Gotham) 20 9. McDonald (Louisville) 20 10.Y. Ryan (Portland) 19
I've watched more NWSL this year than probably any previous year and those chances created numbers seem about right. DeMelo just pops off the screen on a fairly consistent basis. If Louisville can hit on one or two more picks/signings, they're going to get out of the doldrums of all the bad teams in the east and be a real force to be reckoned with.
DeMelo was picked #4 overall in the first round. Congrats to @Savannah_DeMelo on being selected 4th overall by @RacingLouFC in the #NWSLDraft! #FightOn pic.twitter.com/MHg3IVw98s— USC Women's Soccer (@USC_WSoccer) December 18, 2021
I think the same thing about Taylor Smith. How Carolina just let her go is unbelievable. She is a bolt of lighting and a huge gift to Gotham.
...I really don't want to do it, but I think I may need to figure out how many points the Spirit have dropped between the 80th minute and the final whistle over the course of this season.
Okay, it's not as bad as it feels - or, put another way, dropping points late isn't the only thing holding the Spirit back. They've let in 6 goals after the 80th minute, which isn't too bad out of 21 GA over the course of the season, though it is on the high side. It feels bad as those six have come in just four games. Overall, the Spirit have dropped 8pts (and gained 1pt) after the 80th minute, meaning they'd still be 7th in the table if those goals weren't scored (and that's even after accounting for other teams losing those point in exchange). Maybe more noteworthy is that the Spirit don't have a single multi-goal loss on the season so far, meaning they've just lost that little bit of edge they had in their 20-game unbeaten run of somehow finding that one extra goal. If you change the scoreline by 1 in just half of their 9D/6L, that'd be around 12 extra points, putting them well into playoff contention. I kinda view it as a similar situation to RGN, honestly - a team clearly with the talent to top the table, but just not finding the "ruthless" edge they need (as Harvey put it) with the only difference being that RGN have been a hair better at getting that one extra goal this year than DC have (RGN only have one multi-goal GD this year, a win)
