In honour (or dishonour) of the numerous of NSR threads that have cropped up recently, and certain football threads that have strayed so far off topic, that the rhetoric military police have been called in - I hereby christen a new dedicated NSR thread...

The reason behind which, stops certain mis-direction of other threads, allows a continued basis for people to come here and talk in English. The other sticky thread we have is aimed specifically at French speakers and therefore hinders a large majorirty of posters...

And it gives people the chance to....well as the French say; "bavarder"

The name is kinda fun and for the intellectuals amongst us, is the name of a novel by Jean Cocteau or for the non-cultured, that terrorist group in Metal Gear Solid.

    Few rules however...

    * Any thing goes (but remains in the rules of ToS)
    * No racism, porn, spam, trolling or anything untoward of that nature
    * Absolutely no football talk whatsoever...that's what 99.9% of forum is for.
    * Keep it in English if you can (discussion of French topics is allowed)

So all I can really say is....

    Have fun.

Pffft. This is France not Arsenal!

Bavardage would be correct, I think Bavarde is the fem. adjective...bah. As well as other things,

Considering I wrote this when I was half-asleep, it was a fairly decent stab.

Oh well, we shall keep the inital BSF! lol. :D

Now, I shall spam this place with pictures of sexy ladies.....:D

btw: There is probably only Nanba and a few others who would have picked up the grammatical error. But considering we are a rowdy bunch, it is very apt I think.... :D

I shall precise that I was fussy because it was meant to be the "brand" of your association or whatever. You could do countless grammar bitchslaps on my posts...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a go. I like the criticism. Its the only way I'm going to learn....

Be fussy all you like. If it helps my proficiency...

I said, you being a native speaker - would be one of the few regulars who could have picked up on it...

Sorry that was a typo - I meant to say pork - as not to offend our Jewish posters.

Now I'm off for my daily blumpkin.... :D

    BASTILLE DAY !!!

In 2001, I did live in a student residence which was named "Bastille" near La Bastille in Paris, so on July 14th, I was still locked in my 9m² cell... ;)

Thanks to recent government laws, legal limit is now 7m². As a student, you should be glad you had an access to such lavish abundance as 9m², even if you've certainly caught a lungs cancer thanks to asbestos cement*.

    * yes, I had to check this one in a dictionary.

Taking in account that you also have to remove the ground surface taken by the bed, the cupboard, the sink and the desk, what's left ?
But , yes I was somewhat lucky to find a student housing from the CROUS in Paris hence to have reasonable rents to pay...Last time I went there it was closed though, I'm not sure the building did comply with sanitation rules...

It was cool to go to Jussieu by foot (20mns) and walk on the Henry IV bridge with Notr-Dame to my right...But a misery when I had to take the metro (1hr)to reach Vélizy (Pt de Sèvre + bus) where was my internship.

    I think I will...

Asbestos is "amiante". But if you went in Jussieu, you're doomed already.

"Avant la fin de l'année, il n'y aura plus d'étudiants à Jussieu."
Jacques Chirac, président de la République française, 14 juillet 1996.

And a Breton who studied in Paris ! Are you some sort of traitor ? I thought Bretons and Alsatians shared the same kind of, errr, respectful deference for our Parisian leaders.

Only one year or so...I didn't really have the choice at the time. Now, I appreciate living in Brittany even more !! There are a lot of thing I did like in the city of light, but the daily Parisian life wasn't one of them...

Talking about Asbestos, I remember being in a corridor with some mates while there was some guy with a gas mask and protections all over his body working on an electric cupboard some 6 meters from us ; of course, we were thoroughly protected by...a thin red and white tape separating us from the asbestos dust...

In Marc Bloch University, Strasbourg (mine !), they used asbestos cement in the literature library. And it was AFTER the ban was issued. Workers were so disgusted about this that they didn't paint the cement pillars. When you study, you can see the crude cement pillars with the "Eternit" logo on them. Somewhat scary. However, officials say only asbestos dust is dangerous, and not the cement (at least as long as you don't start chopping it)...

And then again, officials said that the Chernobyl toxic cloud was stopped on the German border.

Note to potential US readers : yes, this is the french university in its full glory. If you want to study in french, go in Quebec.

Or come to Beaulieu (science) in Rennes ! Buildings are crap but at least the campus is in a park with squirrels and little birds. Anyway, I guess most Americans go to La Sorbonne...

i think there some cool provincial universities but it's true that the overall situation is not satisfying.

Concerning Jussieu, it's really the downfall of the 60's-70's modernist crap. The campus was first designed to be built in Brasilia, buildings surrounding the main tower are supported by pillars and underneath them, they're shaped like an airplane wing in order to create a venturi effect (acceleration of the air flow) ; that's pretty cool in Brazil...Not during Parisian winter (given the fact that during summer time, most of the students are on vacation...). Which means that when it's rainy and windy, rain drops are propelled under the buildings, cool !!!

There are buildings outside the main structure I never dare to visit, they looked so gloomy. I'd be interested to know about the suicide statistics...
