If true and if it happens it would be a shame IMO. Vancouver Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi says he can't guarantee that the soccer club will keep the Whitecaps name once its joins the MLS in 2011. http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/...sser_090318/20090318/?hub=BritishColumbiaHome btw. Congrats to the Vancouver Whitecaps on getting MLS.
Whats up with that? They will retain the name but yet the president says they may change it. Which is creating a conflicting statement. edit Sorry got the owners mixed up
Oh no Not this again hey we have 2id in Fort Lewis Canada just in case we can get that dude to Change his mind LOLOL
Yea need to find out why the conflicting stories over the name. Found another link on the possibility of a name change. http://www.vancouversun.com/Sports/official+Whitecaps+joining+2011/1402528/story.html Team President states there's a chance of a name change but not if it goes his way.
NOOOOO! It has to be Whitecaps! For all the reasons we are the Sonders. Vancouver, don't let em do this to you. Sounder Nation is behind you on this!
Whitecaps seems like such a natural name, also it is well known here in Vancouver, Would not be a great move to change it .
grego i got van MLS owner and portland's owner name's mixed up. Vancouver Whitecaps supporters: Contact the team and make sure they stick with whitecaps as name nothing else.
They aren't going to change the name. This is simply an unneccessary marketing ploy. They haven't spent the recent years trying to make everybody believe that this club is in someway related to the NASL Whitecaps just to go and change the name. I'm quite sure the club used their name recognition in their bid to get an MLS franchise. It's just a shame they are going to make the supporters go through this when it was completely not neccessary.
Seattle did before the Fans got involved. Republic Alliance Seattle FC were the 3 choices before the fans got invovled and forced a write in vote.
I e-mailed somebody in the organization (can't reveal his name because he might get mad if he finds out I posted this-then again, he might not), and he said that while the team is proud to be the Whitecaps, they are also the fans' team, and they'll get the fans' opinion before picking a name. Translation: They WILL be the Whitecaps, they just want the certificate of authenticity verifying that this is the name the fans are choosing.
The MLS needs to quit f*%king around, put the vote to the fans already and name the team Whitecaps FC. There is no good reason to change the name and they know it. Geez!
They are just copying Seattle. It would have been far more original to just announce they are keeping their name and stop dicking fans around.
Krammerhead I agree. Perhaps you could start getting the support going in Vancouver to get the team to stick with Whitecaps or Whitecaps FC.
It seems as though putting off the official naming allows them to avoid using the current logo and gives them time to re-work it and come up with a jersey design and maybe even a sponsor before splashing it out in a big future announcement as the Whitecaps so jerseys can be sold and exciting press had. I doubt the intent is to actually change the name.
The threat of removing an NASL name from the MLS club is a cheap and effective way to drum-up support. Grassroots is passionate when the community is angry. Seattle has paved the road for this ploy.
After producing this excellent promotional video : [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVbz36wAyPs"]YouTube - Vancouver MLS 2011[/ame] Does anyone think they will change the name? Lock in Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Don't MLS own any potential names now? If the Sounders or Whitecaps want to leave MLS, isn't that name owned by MLS to do what they want with it?
