Good news for the Wizards. I would be shocked if they didn't take Nyarko with the 1st overall pick.

That's quite a lot for KC to give up for an unproven player. #1 draft picks in MLS historically suck.

This definately makes a lot of sense for Kansas City since it looks like EJ is gone. But I thought San Jose already obtained a bunch of defenders/ defensive midfielders in the expansion draft. I guess Yallop wants to ensure his team doesn't concede a lot of goals in its first year, not a bad philosophy.

I think this is a good move for the Wizards. You have to take chances to get good fowards.

I'm not sure this is a particularly good long-run move for SJ. They could pick up a decent defender in this draft in the second round.

Are they really going to start the season with Kamara and Glinton at forward? And it's a lot easier to find a quality foreign defender than a quality foreign forward.

I know this MLS rumors site would love to say their announcement is "original", but I posted about that 42 minutes before they did in:

With Eddie packing his bags for England, maybe KC is bringing in someone special lol or rebuilding for the future as I see it.

EJ for KC just got sold to Fulham - they need a #2 forward to go with Sealey- #1 pick, take Nyarko, problem solved.

SJ had picked Clarence Goodson to anchor their defense - His contract was up and he signed with a norwegian team - SJ needs their defensive anchor more than the #1 pick.

I think this is fantastic move for SJ as I didn't rate Nyarko as a can't miss guy. Playing on an expansion team I think he may well have looked bad. With KC he should do pretty well though.

BTW, I also made that post 9 minutes before the KC Star. What I would like to know is, did the MLS rumors site use my post as their source? If not, where did they get it? I never revealed my source, so naturally it makes me curious.

Let's test it out. I heard that Manchester United just granted Wayne Rooney a release from his contract so that he could fulfil his lifelong dream of playing for San Jose.

This trade is good for both teams, while Garcia has lost a step, he's always been the thorn in Ruiz's side. And now with Ruiz in LA again that makes the situation that much more interesting. KC needs a forward to step in with Eddie likely to leave.

Re: MLS Rumors: Nick Garcia traded to San Jose for #1 2008 SuperDraft Pick

I don't like the deal for San Jose, unless they are getting a pick back, maybe in the second round. This seems to go against the Moneyball ideals, to pick up a slightly above-average central defender, but one closing in on 30 and making north of $100,000. Yes, the #1 pick is no sure thing, but having the choice of any player out there and to get them at probably half or less of Garcia's cost makes this questionable to me. It's not as bad as Columbus' trade for Herron last year, because Garcia is at least dependable and not an International player. But Garcia is not even a fringe national-team level player at this point.

Remember that Kansas City picked up Conrad from San Jose several years ago for a second-round pick. That's value - and San Jose should have been looking for a similar type of bargain on another team's roster. Now they have almost no picks with which to start building their roster.

Or maybe Billy Beane knows something I don't.

I doubt that Beane had anything whatsoever to do with it. It's possible though that Doyle and Yallop looked at some kind of data like they apparently did with some of the expansion draftees. (IIRC they looked at possession data as a way to sort of validate their choice of Guerrero).

Re: MLS Rumors: Nick Garcia traded to San Jose for #1 2008 SuperDraft Pick

He knows the #1 pick in the MLS Draft is 1000 times more of a crapshoot than the #1 pick in MLB, and that his team needs players who can play and lead right away. This year still seems not to have produced a consensus number 1 as well, so it might be a little more undervalued than the 2007 MLS #1 pick. Obviously the Wizards like their options.

The Wizards probably got a little better value than they historically should've, but I think Beane is smart to go after a solid consistent player who won't miss games, and has a relatively small cap number for his experience. I'm sure the fact that Garcia has played very well against Ruiz over the years didn't hurt.

That's the part I don't get. If Yallop is trying to win this year, he's taking the wrong tack. He is the one coach who can live with a bad season this year.

To me, it's a bigger deal that the KC Star broke it before Goff did (2:44 ET, since you are keeping track). The Star usually treats the Wizards like the red-headed bastard stepchild at a family reunion.
