what can you guys tell me about him. does he just want to play with the us? not good enough to make the dutch team? just overlooked of/not thought of for our u-17? how does he compare to our other top young goalies?

i follow the yanks abroad, but just really started following it big time when i found this site in the last year. so guys like this i dont really know anything about.

In my years on BS, this may be the first guy that I found out about from US Soccer and not from somebody on this website. We're slipping.

I think Nicolas Torres and Genaro Fernandez were found out by US Soccer too.

Nicholas Skverer hopes for the impossible.

NIJMEGEN - Nicholas Skverer joins Oranje -17 for the worldcup in Peru. The young Wijchenaar is the only player in the squad who knows his place. The worldcup is for the NEC player a kind of holiday.

That being sure about something is not always good is something Nicholas Skverer can relate to. The young Wijchenaar is ofcourse very proud to be in the Dutch squad but he also knows he won't get any minutes playing time, unless something happens to his fellow keepers.
Still he hopes for the impossible.

"Ofcourse I hope to play and I also have to be prepared but Ruud Kaiser, our coach, already told me I'm the third goalkeeper. It's a pity to know upfront that the chance is very small I'll actually play. But it's not that bad. In the end I'm still part of the team and I get the chance to go to Peru.

The Wijchenaar is part of an exceptional bunch of talents. In may of this year (2005) Oranje -17 reached the finals of the European championship in Italy but lost 0-2 to Turkey.
"I watched those games on tv. I't pretty weird being part of that squad now. Suddenly I belong to the best players of my age. I'm even one of the best keepers of my age. Isn't that great?"

Nicholas Skverer is a special talented goalkeeper. He started originally as a player but 7 years ago his transfermation into a keeper started. I started at AWC in Wijchen as a field player but in the second year in the D-youth our keeper left for NEC. We didn't have a reserve and I decided to take his position."

The experiment turned out to be a great success and the young Skverer never left that position again. Within a few years he was noticed by the NEC scouts and 4 years ago he left for the Nijmegen club. This season it's his first year in the A1. "I'm happy here. Now that I'm this far, the dream of being a pro-player could become really serious. I want to finish my study first and then we'll see what happens".

The biggest part of his life he lived in Wijchen but he also has Argentinian and Macedonian roots and the first 6 years of his life he lived in the US.
"I was born there, my parents lived in Los Angeles back than. I can't remember a lot from that period but I have to visit LA again sooner or later. Fantastic city. My last name is Macedonian or at least somewhere East-European, but you need to go way back in our family history. My father is from Argentina, but I'm just Dutch, like my mother.

Nicholas Skverer is now with Dutch club FC Oss; however, I do not know in what capacity. He played in a friendly for them this weekend so it could just be a trial or he may have signed.
