Nice article by Grant Wahl: Es un clasico Didn't see this posted on the Quakes board. Some nice words from Arena on Mullan & Walker. A nice picture of Yallop after the game as well.... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/writers/grant_wahl/11/10/mls.classic/index.html
Yeah, baby! I'm pretty sure someone else did link this article earlier, BTW, but too lazy to check which thread. Nice to see Wahl mentioned the same Oilers/Bills game (for comparison's sake) that I did in the postgame thread, too. And I feel really lucky to have been at (according to Wahl and Arena) the TWO greatest MLS games ever, last night and MLS Cup 1.
Screw it. I'm leaving it separate. Article deserves commentary, and at this point everybody knows the result, anyway.
New tagline for Quakes forum? I say we make this our new tagline: ¡¡¡Cinco a cuatro, increîble!!! ¡¡¡Es un clásico!!!
Did you notice? This picture was taken about 3-5 minutes after Faria's GWG as the teams were leaving the field. The east stands at Spartan are still brimming with celebrating fans - a few have dashed off, that's it. But the away fans section -- the "yellow corner" -- got very empty in a hurry.
Great article. Does a great job of summing up the electrifying atmosphere of this game and also of pointing out it was a huge COLLECTIVE effort on the part of the Quakes, and that there were many, many heroes (sorry, overused sports word). Great pic too. Does anyone else know where we/I can see more pics from this game? Too bad Andy Mead wasn't on the sidelines snapping his digital.
Two things. One, the Quakes need to get their hands on a copy of the match video from MLS, and sell it on DVD and VHS for $19.95. Two, there'd better be something in this week's Sports Illustrated (from Wahl, hopefully), about the match.
Yeah, that's the game I was thinking of on my way home. I saw that game live on TV and it was eerily similar. Houston actually lead 28-3 at halftime, and then scored again in the second half before folding their tent. Just as LA scored at Spartan in the second (90 minute) half before choking. In both cases, everyone was thinking the home side must score right out of the locker room and being scored on was unthinkable.
Okay, so I just now read this article. And what struck me the most was this: "As Arena put it, "Before the game, I told Frank [Yallop], 'You can't let them get the first goal, and if they get the second goal [to go up 4-0 overall] then head to the bar.' "I'm happy he didn't listen to my advice." Even our national team coach woulda thought we were done. But not Franky....
