This is really interesting to see. I know @peterhrt has posted some of the results before.

One thing I notice now is that for the years up to 2012 (maybe not afterwards), it could be that a shortlist of 6 was given to voters, because looking at the first 10 years and then some random examples from later I noticed that the percentages seem to add up to 100%. So maybe it is not a top 6 from a free vote, but a presentation of 6 candidates for each voter to pick one from.

I could be wrong, but between 2013 and 2015 the system looks like it could be to pick 5 of the 6 players in order, still from a shortlist of 6 maybe (each voter giving 5 for 1st place down to 1 for 5th place would mean 35 voters would hand out 525 points between them which is what the total is for all those years). If that was the case the maximum possible for a player to get would be 175 points in those years (35 first place votes).

Something is different for 2016 though anyway, which seems to be the last year the vote took place of course.

No, sorry, I see now after going to the translated version of the page that Dearman linked that from 2013 all 6 players received points so it was 25 voters allocating points from 6 to 1. The maximum a player could get would be 150 points, and as shown on the page in 2013 Lewandowski actually received 84% of the votes for first place which would be higher than anyone in any of the previous surveys I think wouldn't it.

I guess the same system did stay in place for the next 2 years, but I'm not sure about 2016 or what percentage of first place votes Oblak got.

I had a look now into making an XI (and 3 more) based on the results of the voting over this whole period. I scored each first place 11 points by default, or 12 if the player received over 60% of the votes (or between 2013 and 2015 more than 125 points...and I scored Oblak 12 points too for 2016 even being uncertain about the exact points system for that year, but I went with Viktor for team 4 below as I didn't feel Oblak's win was definitely more clear-cut anyway than Viktor's from 1976). For each second place it was 9 points, or 10 if the player received over 20% of the vote (between 2013-2015 more than 110 points, and Modric got the benefit of the doubt for 2016 too). For third places 7 by default, or 8 if the player got over 16% of the vote (or between 2013-2015 more than 95 points, with Lewandowski getting the benefit of the doubt for 2016 too). For fourth place 5 points, or 6 if the player got over 12% of the vote (or between 2013-2015 more than 80 points, while it seems like Rakitic, plus Hamsik and Popov would most likely not have enough points for the bonus judging by the gap to the other 3 in 2016). For fifth places 3 points, or 4 if the player got over 8% of the vote (or between 2013-2015 more than 65 points). For sixth places 1 point, or 2 if the player got over 4% of the vote (or between 2013-2015 more than 50 points - which is 25 more than the minimum just as 125 is 25 less than the maximum).

So it resulted in this (with Cech and Dorner receiving a higher percentage of the vote than Dasaev and Shesternyov in the year of their highest or only placing respectively - Cech and Dasaev both winning the poll one year each in 2012 and 1983, and Dorner and Shesternyov both coming second in their only inclusions in 1984 and 1970). A player was slotted into any position he could/did play pretty much, if close enough to his best/main role in the years concerned also. I did settle on Popescu as midfielder though whereas he'd be in team 1 if placed in defence as libero for example (but certainly his overall tally that would be required to be in that team 1 leant on votes/inclusions from playing in midfield such as in 1996 for sure). Likewise if I allowed Kanchelskis as right back rather than right winger he'd also make team 1 (but even though doing very well for the NT like in Euro 92 as a right back, his main position at club level was winger and I assume his points tally is due primarily to that, especially as he wasn't included in 1992 anyway either)....

(Based on a 1-3-1-3-1-1 formation or 4-4-1-1 with libero, three AMs, and a number 10 behind a number 9, which seemed the most suitable system based on the results and in general the various formations that would be used by the teams of the players: libero is number 4, anchor mid number 6 and the others should be obvious enough)
1st XI: 1: Yashin (USSR), 2: Srna (Croatia), 3: Demienenko (USSR), 4: Dorner (East Germany), 5: Vidic (Serbia), 6: Masopust (Czechoslovakia), 7: Bene (Hungary), 8: Modric (Croatia), 9: Shevchenko (Ukraine), 10: Boniek (Poland), 11: Blokhin (USSR)
2nd XI: 1: Cech (Czech Republic), 2: Bessonov (USSR), 3: Zhirkov (Russia), 4: Shesternyov (USSR), 5: Popluhar (Czechoslovakia), 6: Valery Voronin (USSR), 7: Kanchelskis (Russia), 8: Hagi (Romania), 9: Lewandowski (Poland), 10: Susic (Yugoslavia), 11: Nedved (Czech Republic)
3rd XI: 1: Dasaev (USSR), 2: Ivanovic (Serbia), 3: Mihajlovic (Yugoslavia), 4: Ondrus (Czechoslovakia), 5: Skrtl (Slovakia), 6: Panenka (Czechoslovakia), 7: Savicevic (Yugoslavia), 8: Zavarov (USSR), 9: Stoichkov (Bulgaria), 10: Albert (Hungary), 11: Dzajic (Yugoslavia)
4th XI: 1: Viktor (Czechoslovakia), 2: Shalamanov (Bulgaria), 3: Jankulowski (Czech Republic), 4: Chivadze (USSR), 5: Kuznetsov (USSR), 6: Popescu (Romania), 7: Stojkovic (Yugoslavia), 8: Deyna (Poland), 9: Suker (Croatia), 10: Nyilasi (Hungary), 11: Hleb (Belarus)

I haven't thought about teams 2-4 yet, but for comparison I guess this is the team I'd have come up with if trying for an Eastern European XI from the players of that period myself (not to say I'd be certain about it even in my own view and obviously some of these players in the 4 teams above were not that well known to me, so it's always interesting to find out about them and perhaps see some footage too; the libero position would already be a toss-up without considering the lesser known/watched names I think, and of course I knew there are many good options in the attacking positions):
1: Yashin, 2: Petrescu (Romania), 3: Jarni (Yugoslavia/Croatia), 4: Ondrus, 5: Zmuda (Poland) (I don't know whether I might be considering Shesternyov as number 5 though potentially if I didn't pick him at number 4), 6: Masopust, 7: Bene or maybe Lato (Poland), 8: Hagi, 9: Shevchenko, 10: Savicevic, 11: Dzajic

For a straight top scoring (using the system I outlined above) 40 players regardless of position (rather than four XIs) this is what the outcome was......

    1: Blokhin 77pts, 2: Shevchenko 72pts, 3: Lewandowski 55pts, 4: Modric 54pts, 5: Boniek & Stoichkov 43pts, 7: Suker 42pts, 8: Susic 40pts, 9: Albert, Hagi & Nedved 38pts, 12: Bene 37pts, 13: Masopust 35pts, 14: Dzajic & Yashin 34pts, 16: Nyilasi 33pts, 17: Zavarov 30pts, 18: Deyna 29pts, 19: Hleb & Kanchelskis 28pts, 21: Cech & Dasaev 25pts, 23: Mijatovic, Savicevic & Skoblar 24pts, 26: Stojkovic 23pts, 27: Berbatov 22pts, 28: Protosov, Rebrov & Vidic 21pts, 31: Yarmolenko 20pts, 32: Boksic, Dzeko, Rosicky & V.Voronin 19pts, 36: Lubanski, Mutu, Nehoda & Srna 18pts, 40: Panenka 17pts

This seems like the best thread for this. There was discussion of the lists for the Soviet 33 best players of the season, which were compiled by the Soviet football federation, and completed by the historian Lukashin. I have them collected on an Excel sheet going back to 1931. Since these are a pain to find online, I'm sharing the file here. There are probably a bunch of transliteration errors involved, since I had to do some of it manually. @peterhrt

I saw an interesting quick report about the selection of an All-Time Hungary XI in 1957, published in the newspaper Magyar Nemzet (I think anyway? - that's what is says, Nemzet rather than Memzet, in a version of the report in a Welsh newspaper and in that one Bozsik is called a centre-half, maybe just because that's where he is selected in this XI that uses a more traditional WM with a playmaking centre half I suppose, not the 'current' WW or 3-2-3-2 system Hungary tended to use in the 1950s itself).

Here is the report as shown in the Lancashire Evening Post
    hungarianxi1957.png
I would imagine a different view in Hungary could well have been that the team could have had quite a few more 1950s players in (the report kind of hints at surprise more were not in perhaps?) but as it is there are just the two, although with doubts about whether Puskas has been omitted for non-footballing reasons (I'm not saying he'd be getting in such a selection but I suppose a player like Kalman Konrad might also have a harder task to get recognition to some extent because of having left the country during his career). I guess potentially if Sarosi had been put as the 'centre half', with Bozsik in a right half position perhaps, a Hidegkuti might have made it in as the 'centre forward' although I don't know.

Maybe @CristianoPuskas would be able to find more details about whether it was just a choice by the editorial team of the newspaper, or a public vote or something....

Anyway, the team is Platko (2nd placed goalkeeper in the 2013 selection); Fogl (3rd placed right back in the 2013 selection, 47th placed player in the 2010 vote), Bukovi (not featured in the 2010 and 2013 votes but presumably the famous coach of MTK Budapest who had played for Hungary between 1926 and 1930); Rumbold (8th placed as right back in the 2013 selection), Bozsik (1st placed right half in the 2013 selection, 2nd placed player in the 2010 vote), Orth (1st placed left half in the 2013 selection, 5th placed player in the 2010 vote); Braun (3rd placed right winger in the 2013 selection), Kocsis (1st placed inside right in the 2013 selection, 6th placed player in the 2010 vote), Sarosi (3rd placed centre forward in the 2013 selection, 8th placed player in the 2010 vote), Schaffer (5th placed as centre forward in the 2013 selection, joint 27th in the 2010 vote), Titkos (3rd placed left winger in the 2013 selection, 33rd placed player in the 2010 vote).

With it saying re: Puskas "lost him his place" and "latest team" I wonder whether there were other previous votes being alluded to, but I'm not sure (at first I would have guessed lost him his place would just mean it's assumed he would have been in otherwise).

Surely it is something extra-sports. It doesn't make sense for another reason.
By the way, who was Rumbold? Is it a transcription error like Kicsis (=Kocsis)?

I think it will be Gyula Rumbold, so with the correct spelling (like I indicated, 8th right back in the lists Dearman referred to from the book of 2013 by the Hungarian Football Federation - right back because the old-fashioned right halves played like a modern right back maybe? - or maybe he did play as a right back but in 1957 it was considered that he didn't play the role so defensively as Fogl?). I think the early Hungarian Player of the Year awards might have been allocated retrospectively in some book (?) - it seems astonishing Gyorgy Sarosi hasn't been awarded one before 1941 btw!, but he has been the 'winner' for 1909 apparently anyway
    Gyula Rumbold - Wikipedia
Notice Bukovi as the 1928 'Hungarian Player of the Year' too....

In fact, he existed, although I never came across his name, probably because he began to delve into the history of football from 1920. Yes, I did know Bukovi.
It would be great to have the detailed list of the best Hungarian players of each year. Sometimes I have come across biased information from some year, but it is confusing, I don't really know if it was an official award or if it was given by a newspaper or magazine or several of them... If anyone has clear information in this regard, it would be interesting to know

Link below has something on this. It seems that there was never an official annual award, just authors listing names retrospectively and not picking the same player more than once.

Thank you very much mate. In these posts you point out, my doubt clears. Everything seems to indicate that official awards for the best Hungarian player began to give much later, although this type of lists can always be an interesting reference.
