Manchester United captain Gary Neville is planning to build an underground "teletubby" eco-mansion in the Lancashire countryside.

The Telegraph says the 34 year-old, a known environmentialist, wants to build the £8 million carbon-zero house next to his current 12-bedroom home, a former farmstead on moors between Bolton and Bury, Lancs.

He and his wife Emma have spent three years drafting designs for the 8,000 sq ft property, which will contain solar panels, a wind turbine and a ground source heat pump and also include a large central kitchen and various wings.

Energy produced from the wind turbine will be used to power his neighbouring property with any extra energy supplying the national grid, helping to reduce its carbon footprint.

Some of Neville's teammates have gently mocked him for the home, which will be almost entirely underground.

Some believe it bears resemblance to the grassy retreat from the children's television show Teletubbies, which is home to Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.

The structure is so advanced the government wants to use the scheme as a benchmark for all future zero-carbon developments.
