Depending on who you ask, the San Jose Earthquakes' new stadium will likely open either mid-late 2013 or on Opening Day 2014, meaning that the groundbreaking should come either late this summer or sometime this fall. Thusly, the San José stadium porn will likely commence in a few months (from new renderings to photos of the construction and the like), but hopefully even sooner than that. -G
The line about when San Jose's new stadium will get built would make a good twin for Eduardo Galeano's "sources are saying Castro's fall is imminent"
We should get a Montreal Saputo Stadium Porn thread as well, although it might be a little too late since it will be finished in less than a month.
Are midfield seats not selling out? I can't tell if that many people are wearing orange or if they're just seats (not trying to bash). Another badass stadium for the league and one less eye sore televised game.
It was another sell out. There seems to be two sections on the east side of 20-40 seats together, that someone purchased and have not used for either game. Unfortunatly, it is on the TV view side, but the same two groups of empty seats have been seen on both games. Beyond that it was full. Occasional empty seats but hard to tell at any give time if it was people in restroom, concessions, or no-show due to Tuesday night game.
The nickname expired with the corporate sponsorship. It's fair game again. Plus it won't be corporately tied this time.
Was it a corporate tie in? Obviously the fact that it was called Pizza Hut Park helped solidify The Oven as a nickname, but I never noticed anything that showed that Pizza Hut was the one backing it. And I'm not so certain that The Oven nickname will simply die just because the former sponsor is gone. But maybe it will? It's not like FCD has had a whole heck of a lot of success with getting themselves marketed firmly. In any case, I just find it strange that some Houstonians would want to call their spiffy new stadium something that their most hated rivals have used/still use for their own stadium. Just seems odd?
Pizza Hut wasn't backing it, but like you said the existence of the sponsorship made the nickname that much easier. What i was saying was that they wouldn't be calling BBVA "The Oven" because of the associated sponsorship deal.
It does appear much worse on TV then when you are at the game. I don't know what to say, but its a pity. At least the sound seems to translate well because it didn't at the Rob. .. I'm not thrilled with "the oven" since its been used, but there are worse names. At least all the orange gives the appearance of a heated oven so it makes sense. I still think we can come up with something better.
why don't you guys call the stadium The Vault? BBVA is a bank, banks have vaults ... vaults are used to lock things down ... your home pitch is a vault on lockdown to other teams? eh ... just an idea.
yeah. but the compass isn't intimidating or scary ... a compass is a comforting device you really wan't if you are lost ... the vault does not sound like an inviting place you'd like to play a soccer game if you are the visitor plus ... i mean how literal is The Compass ... the bank and stadium are BBVA Compass ... i think a little creativity and embellishment might be good. but hey, it isn't my team's stadium ... it was just fun to watch being built and it was super affordable and looks fantastic and is loud and looks good on tv ... so anything you guys decide to call it is fine by me.
Beautiful stadium but I can't believe it only cost $95,000,000!! how is that even possible when even a new basketball arena can start off at $400,000,000??
Hey, I guess since you guys stole your team, stealing your stadium nickname won't be all that challenging. (In all seriousness though - it is a spiffy new stadium, and am quite jealous of its location near downtown. Should be fun to travel down and watch games there. Here's to FCD moving to actual Dallas in a decade or two, hopefully.)
For starters real estate and labor is cheaper in TX plus/or mainly they didn't go over the top with extravagant features/amenities. It's a good balance of function and design, with tilt towards function.
