It's OFFICIAL! https://www.chicagofirefc.com/post/2021/01/25/chicago-fire-fc-president-nelson-rodr-guez-resigns 1,948 days (and 2,654 posts) too late. Good riddance.
His "concession" speech* is pretty pathetic: “I began discussing my future with Owner and Chairman Joe Mansueto last month. At this transformational time for the organization, and after five years with the Fire, I’m ready for a change and I’m looking forward to taking on new challenges,” said Rodríguez. “I always tried to do what was best for the Club and I am grateful to Joe for his enormous support and to Andrew Hauptman for the opportunity originally given to me. The Club is moving in an exciting direction and I wish the team, the staff and fans the very best of luck.” "I began discussing my future ... last month" Last month? You did not see the writing on the wall over the past 15 months when basically all of your power was stripped? Oh, I see, you did, but thought you should just milk a paycheck out of the Fire for another year and change. F' you, Nelson Rodriguez. "I'm ready for a change..." Well, Nelson 'shady' Rodriguez, we have been ready for a change for about five years. "I always tried to do what was best for the Club..." If true, it is abundantly clear that your "best" was barely above pathetic and not even close to mediocre. Let's take a look at "your best," shall we: 2016: Dead last in the league 2017: 3rd in the league, 1 Playoff game 2018: 20th in the league. Hey, glad there were new teams, I guess. 2019: 17th in the league. Once again, glad there were "expansion" teams. 2020: 22nd in the league. COVID-19 made us numb to so many failures, including yours. Overall: 46 wins, 45 draws, 69 losses (1 playoff loss). 183 points out of 160 games, 1.14 ppg. One winning season, only season with more than 10 wins. 2019-worst attendance (despite having a top 5 payroll), even worse than the Naperville years, with limited capacity. "I am grateful to Andrew Hauptman for the opportunity originally given to me..." You should be grateful for Don Garber for thrusting your useless ass onto Andrew Hauptman, but I guess you should be grateful to Hauptman for firing your useless ass after the disaster of the 2016 season. "The Club is moving in an exciting direction..." and that is NO thanks to you, Nelson. [*Well, better than Donald Tr*mp, since he never actually conceded.]
lol dudes contract expired but rather than announce he wasn't given a new contract, we gave him the chance to "resign". Shouldn't have given him that opportunity, ******** the guy
I think this is consistent with Joe Manseuto's way of doing business. From everything I have read and heard about him, he seems like a pretty stand up guy and, after five years, it seems the sensible thing to do. It also places the "last month" comment in context, I suppose.
This is seriously the most important point. Nelson's existence was always secondary to the fact that Hautpman's Fire was a financial mess and the team needed a cheap-ass to slash and burn things. Good riddance to the last remnant of the Hauptman/Bridgeview era.
Hey, THIS idea is coming back into focus again... The Fire never spoke with Garth last time around. From what I understand, Lagerwey and Rodriguez have a good relationship, but Lagerwey coming to Chicago would likely require that president role. Which Nelson held.— Paul Tenorio (@PaulTenorio) January 25, 2021 I wouldn't be shocked if they consider it. It's never been a big secret that the Sounders have been the model that the Mansueto Fire have been trying to emulate, particularly with some of the other recent hires they've made.

I miss him already! [emoji30][emoji30][emoji30] Just glad they dumped Paunovic first. Or "The soul mates" should have gone together.
