India has had it in the past, their problem is that way too many D2 teams go bankrupt that they have to stop it once i a while. They are a more extreme version of Liga MX. India also has the weirdness of having two D1 leages. the I-league and the ISL.
Tifo football has a pretty good video on this - Only 1 team in ISL is profitable. This will go over well, yup.
Holy crap.. I will never complain about the quality of MLS broadcasts again.. ISL games are filmed on Iphones...
Speaking of which... Saw this in a necrothread, part of the ruling was that Silva and co had to pay a chunk of the legal costs for FIFA, CONCACAF, and USSF. https://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/4049041/mls-gets-favourable-promotion-relegation-ruling-from-cas
Good thing Kingston’s owner has deep pockets. Paying that amount of money would cripple most amateur teams.
"In the case that refuses to end, the Court granted NASL and USSF's joint motion to extend the discovery schedule. It was last extended to close March 13, and discovery will now close on May 4, 2020." https://t.co/1Gb2pf7Vaf "In 12/18, discovery was extended to 11/19 In 6/19, it was extended to 1/20 In 10/19, it was extended to 3/20 In 2/20, it was extended to 5/20 Antitrust cases take a long time, especially if the plaintiff has an open checkbook (as appears to be the case w/ NASL)"
Soccer being kind of an anti-establishment sport in this country for so long really brought out a non-insignificant number of people who've used the sport to be insufferably pretentious over the last couple decades. From the kids from the exurbs who've used Euro ball to have an excuse to feel cool and worldly to the over the top "MLS traditionalists" who get steaming mad any time an American team has an "FC" tacked onto their name and insist that anyone not supporting their team their way is a "plastic". It's why I've been enjoying seeing the success of teams like Atlanta. A stadium full of engaged regular old normie sports fans cheering their local MLS franchise is like kryptonite to those people.
American soccer fans: "We want to grow the sport here!" Also American soccer fans: "No, not like that!!!"
Silva’s response to the ruling. https://www.silvainternational.com/2020/02/12/statement-in-response-to-cas-ruling/ Mod note: Added a quote so it wasn't a link dump.
Basically comes down to "CAS agreed with us that the plain wording of the regulation is that pro/rel is required, but disagreed that it was enforceable due to FIFA's interpretation". *shrug* it was a fool's errand from the beginning, tbh. FIFA wasn't about to force the US to implement pro/rel anymore than they are going to swoop in and stop Liga MX from doing whatever it is that they are doing.
"...we still believe that an open, merit-based system would bring major benefits to the quality of the game, and would create inclusive, competitive and non-discriminatory soccer in the USA" Deloitte study that you commissioned says otherwise.
I seem to recall Silva being all about pro/rel when Bill Peterson wanted it as a pathway to MLS but was less enthused when Peterson floated the idea of doing it with the NPSL. So he's probably more about pro than rel. Ergo, he's probably more about getting into MLS without having to pay an expansion fee or go through the bidding process, than sporting merit.
Well.. Yes. There was even one point where NASL either claimed they were in advance discussions with NPSL to implement pro/rel, or that they were open to it, then NPSL immediately responded "Hell, yes, let's do this". At which point NASL responded, "Haha, JK, we weren't serious."
So go ahead and start your pro/rel league!!! Who's stopping you? Let it go head to head with MLS and let the chips fall where they may! --1000's Of Eyerolling Fans.
Because Silva, Crowley and others want to hop on the MLS train, riding the same coattails others have that actually put in the work?
I think Crowley has said that he couldn't afford to join NASL, never mind MLS. Nobody lives here. The population of Kingston, Poughkeepsie and surrounding towns is only 188k.
