Union out. Last Week: Red Stars___456___31.3% Wind_______307___21.0% Riot________239___16.4% Blues_______195___13.4% 1871_______166___11.4% Union_______96____6.6% TOTAL: Red Stars__2,800___25.0% 1871______2,311___20.6% Wind______1,912___17.1% Riot_______1,804___16.1% Blues______1,324___11.8% I'm predicting the Blues are on their way out, but wouldn't be surprised if 1871 gets dropped.
The Red Stars and 1871 are in the top three. Its down to the Riot and Wind for the last spot. I really hope the Wind gets the boot.
First week of the finalist stage is in the books: http://chicagoprowomenssoccer.blogspot.com/2008/04/red-stars-lead-grows.html
I just thought it was interesting that two of the names suggested were names of local rugby teams. Also, they do have sponsors and a real league.
Peter, How many real votes do you think have been entered? Also, aren't these name the team contests a ploy to get contact info to try and sell tickets. By the way to say the 2000 Fire team was the best soccer team in Chicago history is a bit of a joke. Granted it is just an opinion, but if your team doesn't win a championship regardless of the talent on the team you're not hte best. Top 3 Teams in Chicago History since 1967 1. 1981 Sting 2. 1984 Sting 3. 1998 Fire 4. No team deserves this spot until they win a championship.
Since I was not actually involved in the naming of the sport, feel free to read up on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_football
A few thousand votes have probably been submitted. One man's "ploy" is another man's "attempt". In addition to our efforts to increase our contact list, we are using the Sweepstakes to INFLUENCE our decision. If Riot or Union would've led the poll, they would've had a good chance to be selected. They didn't, so they probably won't be selected as a direct result. Using your criteria for choosing best teams ever, the 1945 Chicago Cubs were a better team than the 1969, 1984, 2003 and 2007 Cubs. i believe that a great team can fail to win a championship - especially in soccer. That is certainly the case with the 2000 Fire. A world class goalkeeper performance and a bunker defense cost the Fire the title, but i don't believe that takes them off the list of greatest or best Chicago soccer teams ever. peter
They are going to announce the name next Tuesday. They are going to have a press conference at Toyota Park at 11 am ct, Tuesday June 3rd. They will announce the name and new logo.
I would like that. I am a big Red Star Belgrade fan and even though Chicago Red Stars will have nothing associated or resembling the legendary 1991 European and World Champions, I still like the name. A home kit with red striped shirts, red shorts and red socks would be cool. Kind of like the FCI logo. Plus, they would have something in common with the fire. The color red. We like red in Chicago.
I like Red Star Chicago. Then again, they'll probably go with city name first (a la Houston Dynamo sted Dinamo Houston). I'd like to see the anti-Rachael Ray scarf and anti-Absolut Vodka ad people jump on this one and see the PTH jump back. Hah!
Very reasonable season ticket prices - that's less per game than what the Freedom is charging at the gate right now for the W-League team.
