I just wanted to compare a few things on the most recent MLS and NFL halftime shows... the [R] was put in mostly for my amusement, but also for any of those who did not see Janet Jackson's nasty boob as it will no doubt be mentioned or shown at least once.

What can MLS learn from the NFLs most recent HalfTime show?

    * Obviously the scope is TOTALLY different.

NFL has dozens of dancers, a huge stage, fireworks, lights, and a half dozen big stars.

MLS has Michelle Branch and 20 kids.

    * Is the target audience different?

Yes NFL markets to football fans and MLS markets to football fans, totally different, but is the target audience (other than that one fact) really that different demographically? I imagine MLS fans span as wide an age gap and as many different ethnicities, and especially musical tastes as the NFLs.

Personally, I don't think watching last years stars dance around for frightening amounts of money was at all entertaining, I changed the channel, but likewise watching ONE performer sing a song or two is not all that entertaining either.

Maybe a huge stage and pyrotechnics is out of MLS's league (god i hope not), but getting two or three moderately current young stars is not (and they've shown this in the past, Shakira being the first I can remember).

What i'm hoping for is that MLS can put on a small but visually attractive halftime show with a diverse but not necessarily world renowned group of artists.

MLS does NOT need P Didhe and U2, but instead of hiring just michelle branch to sing maybe they'd take a hint from the NFL and have a slightly faster paced halftime show, and some better music. Maybe it IS out of MLS' scope to put highlight reels from that same game on DURING halftime with premade music specifically for them dubbed over it but a little more flash would go a long way.

I realize its totally besides the point, if the game is entertaining it will sell itself, but on the other hand its the little things like PRESENTATION that will elevate MLS above the bush-league status people seem to give it right now.

My picks for Music Groups to perform:

Black Eyed Peas / Buju Banton / Wyclef / Outkast
(in order of cheapest to most expensive i'd imagine)

Flogging Molly / The Dandy Warhols / The Dropkick Murphys / Manu Chao

Somebody good, somebody that is not your normal halftime performer, and more than one of them.

    Show me the money.

Im sure that half time show cost around two or three MLS team salaries.

It really is too bad that Michelle Branch's boob didn't pop out at our game...

...tasteless, I know, but true nonetheless.

Argh. . . You beat me to it. Not that I want anything to do with either Jackson or Branch.

Sorry, I think halftime shows lick ass. As a massive U2 fan, I even got bored with their halftime show.

The World Series doesn't need em, and I like that much better.

Hmmmm.....that's what I was thinking. Anybody else notice how her first instinct was definitely not to cover it up (ever been pants'd before? What was your first reaction?) Also, 2 words, people: "Ti" and "Vo".

MLS simply doesnt have the money to produce something like that. Having said that the past couple of performances have been DULL. This has nothing to do with money but just what the artists chose to do. They chose to play slow mellow songs that sucked the energy out of the whole thing. If they cant afford huge mega stars then I wouldnt mind seeing good small bands that will rock out and make everyone feel exited about being there.

To me, the halftime show either needs to be done right or not at all. You look much more of an ass doing it wrong than not having one at all.

MLS schould scrap their halftime show ASAP to save the little "halftime credibility" it has left.

IF MTV were going to bring these guys out at halftime, I'd give them another shot at a halftime show. Otherwise, I don't want my MTV producing another halftime show-EVER!

I can't believe I was talked into watching last night's garbage.

actually that might not be such a bad idea either, better to not have one at all than put out a bad one.

or a smaller band or two that will put on a good performance, and especially not a slow sad wimpy ballad like the last one.

Drop the half-time show. It's an american football tradition out of college: the marching band, the majorettes twirling batons, etc.

Now Janet Jackson bares a boob.

What we offer can only be a pale imitation of crass commercialism at its worst.

Screw "half-time" shows. How long did that thing take last night? (I ask because I didn't watch, but I suspect it was longer than the usual half-time) I'm glad MLS Cup doesn't mutate the game in the name of "entertainment."

You want good half-time entertainment? Offer good analysis for the fans at home, commercials to pay the bills, and for folks at the stadium, legions of well-trained vendors making sure everyone can get beer and food and get back to their seats for the game.

Now, if you hire 1000 Elvis impersonators to vend in the stands on MLS Cup day, then we'll be onto something both entertaining AND practical.

Like most people, the halftime shows (at either event) are the perfect opportunity for me to relieve my bladder, refresh my bowls of chips and salsa, stretch my legs, check my email and read the newspaper, so I'm not the best person to comment on this.

All I ask is that it not be too long. 35 minutes for the Super Bowl nonsense is ridiculous.

I agree. MLS need not follow the way of halftime shows as the NFL does. That would be a great mistake. Maybe the NFL needs a big halftime otherwise people would be to bored to come back for the second half?
All MLS needs is a little good music a some shapely cheerleaders jumping around for 10-15 minutes. Anything else is total overkill. If the NFL wants to throw money away let em.

    NO halftime show

Can we kindly cut the crap. #### a halftime show. It's a soccer event, not a concert date for young jackasses who wouldn't know good music if it came up to them and bit them on the ass.

Stop trying to emulate the Super Bowl. And while we're at it, get it out of a neutral site.

    two points

    1. Halftime shows ruin the field for the second half (most notably being Ricky Manning Jr.'s slip on Troy Brown's 2nd 13 yrd reception on the winning drive, no slip = no catch = overtime)

    2. Does anybody else notice the striking resemblance to her brother in the fox sports pic posted on this thread (before any morons decide to say "no *#*#*#*#*# sherlock", shut the F&^k up)

    Brilliant, and yet so simple.

This would be a good half-time. Keep it simple, just like during the regular season.

NFL has now set a new standard in bimbos. Can MLS top (or untop) that?

You want a halftime show? Show the Top Ten Goals of the year (and maybe Top Ten Saves if you have the time) on the big screen complete with some great voiceovers or whatever. Clean and simple, and also advertises the sport.

I NEVER want the MLS final to be like the Superbowl. I realized last night how corny the whole Superbowl has become. They should rename it the Cheesebowl. It seems like its hardly about the game of football anymore. Its more like its just an excuse for most people to have a party during the winter and watch singers, dancers, and commercials.

Then again...I'm not like most people...I'm a soccer fan.
