Max says SJ looks "ahead of the curve from previous expansion teams" -- conveniently ignoring the one expansion team that actually won the MLS Cup in their debut season. Which team was that . . . ?
In his defense, and I'd hate to defend Max Bretos, pretty much every team in 1998 was still playing like an expansion team. So it's hard to think of that year's Chicago team facing any of the same obstacles expansion teams from 2005 on have dealt with.
To be fair, the circumstances are completely different. The way MLS is now, no expansion team has a chance.
I have to agree with the prior poster that says the citing of Chicago has got to go. The league specifically changed the rules of the expansion draft after that to make contender status in that first year very, very hard to achieve.
I'd like to dispute all the logical and rational arguments against my glib comment and say "Nuh uh." I'm sorry .... this match has officially bored me into knee-jerkism.
Yeah, the bigger the league gets, the weaker the expansion draft gets as each team has less quality to give. I mean, the Fire got Chris Armas in the expansion draft. San Jose got Jason Hernandez.
Glinton misses a great heading chance -- flags up anyway. Sullivan malaprops "Ronnie Ekelund" instead of "Ronnie O'Brien." Heh.
The other big key was that nobody was exempt in the 1997 expansion draft. Now, with all the GenAd exemptions (in 2004, the entire Dev roster was exempt as well), you have much fewer tough decisions. Plus, you get fewer picks now, which means less depth and less competition for spots.
"1906?" There's a big flag / banner in the SJ supporters section that reads 1906. The hell? Any ideas.... OH... SJ with a great chance breaking through by Johnson on the endline, but cleared.
RE: 1906. 1906 was the name of the supporters group for the California Victory, the USL-1 team from last year that played at Kezar up in the City. I think they have merged (or were just the same people as) the Quakes' Ultras. So their name is now the 1906 Ultras, or Ultras 1906. Or something.
And you're expected to make up the rest of the roster from draft picks and attempting to convince some players from abroad to come join a club that in it's first year of existence. Toss in a new coach for nearly every player, and a long layoff for guys it's really hard to get a team together that will work for each other and play off each other well. Oh, and another thing. I know the word "deserve" gets tossed around here pretty often, but I think San Jose really deserve a share of the spoils here today.
So, I was quite unfamiliar with Chicago sub Daniel Woolard and checked out his MLS bio and learned this little ditty about him: Uh, Danny, isn't the city you play in sitting on one of the biggest lakes in the world? Somehow, I think there's a bit of fishing in Lake Michigan. Anyway, his MLS debut after playing just for the reserves last year. Nice to see Hamlett giving the kid a chance.
Looks like the game is coming to a close, I just wanted to thank you Crimen (and anyone else who posted) for the updates. I appreciate it.
Oh, Corrales just missed -- off the crossbar. OH Kamara heads down beautifully onto the post -- and Salinas sails the rebound over!
Ah, Sandon, you could have done what I did: nap during this game (Minute 15 to minute 82). And I was awake for the final flurry - who says it was a boring game? Everything I saw was great!
