Yeah, that much I understood. And I'm really ok with - MLS has a lot of homerism in the broadcast booths (Shep Messing, anyone?). I'm just fascinated by the logistics of all this, as I'm sure a lot of people are.
Well, I disagree on Shep Messing. You can obviously tell who he's rooting for, but 1)it's a home team broadcast crew. They're always that way, and 2)Shep Messing is more than willing to rip Red Bulls new assholes when they screw up or do something boneheaded. There's positives and negatives to neutral commentary instead of home team crews. You get much more honest, factual stuff from neutrals as opposed to wishing and hoping. But home team guys/gals also react to big moments the same way fans of the team do. It's nice to be able to re-live the biggest moments in history by not only watching the video, but listening to Dwight or Neil going berserk.
I never minded going on hold when calling the Crew FO because their "hold music" was Dwight's PbP. With that said, I believe it was @00Kevin who posted goal calls from the 2002 FIFA WC. If you have homerism like how Jack and Ty did it, I'll skip that any day.
https://nypost.com/2022/09/20/mlb-n...owner-of-regional-sports-tv-networks-sources/ I'm glad MLS figured out their national deal and not get caught up in this mess. As an NHL fan I hope this eventually works itself out.
Back at HCS when they used to run a few of Dwight's calls over the PA it was always a thrill even years later. "MCBRIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" was just something you had to hear. Dwight was simply the best. Nobody could call a game like him. Then Sika turned him into a p*ssy who wanted to babble about Queen and Radio Gaga.
Brad Sham (Dallas Burn) was another strong announcer from the early years. Then there was Greg Lalas, who might not have gotten the job if he didn't have that last name.

https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09...r-a-farewell-to-mls-regional-broadcast-crews/ Here's a farewell salute to the regional TV crews. They're gonna mention Dwight and Bill, but leave out Katie Witham, Duncan Oughton and Dante Washington? Clay Hall even worked a few games as a sideline reporter way back when.
I'm OK with Dante Washington being left out of that. Dante was a lot of things, but a charismatic color analyst wasn't one of them.
Eh, it's sort of the principle of "if you're gonna list some historical, why not list all?" For that matter, they also forgot Ashleigh Ignelzi. Dwight had been there every year from 1996-2019. It's fine to mention him as historical, since he was a legend, but to list Bill and not other historical names seems odd to me.
Oh man that reminds me of so many stories with Ashleigh while she was here. I really hope the L.A life is treating her well.
This sounds weird to say, but tonight will be the last time a home announce team calls a game at LDC. I wonder when all the personnel who are going to be involved in the new deal will be announced. Must be a stressful time for the current crop of announcers.
Radio rights belong to the local ownership. ESPN radio does simulcast a game on SiriusXM sometimes (SiriusXM FC) but #1 there's zero money in it and #2 in order to broadcast any more than one game they'd have to bump the big Weber State vs. East Texas Baptist Teachers College football game. And sadly, the latter would undoubtedly draw more listeners on a Saturday than RSL - Vancouver. So I'd bet the ranch that Chris Doran will be calling the games again next year. A big win.
Interesting piece on the MLS/Apple deal from World Soccer Talk. (I know, I know) Mostly points out all the questions that have yet to be a swerved along with some things that only time will tell. Still though, some good stuff https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/29/questions-mls-must-answer-before-apple-tv-launch/
