    Target Numbers

Playoff Qualification Number - 44 pts

Western Conference Championship - SJ needs 20 pts that they earn or Dallas loses

Eastern Conference Championship - Metro need 25 pts they earn or Chicago loses

    Thanks Hala.

I don't understand the Playoff Qual Number. Columbus, currently 8th, would have to win 6 and tie 1 out its remaining 8 games just to reach it, and yet currently it's in the playoffs. I'm probably not understanding your definition of the Play Qual Number. Maybe you mean if you reach 44 you're pretty much AUTOMATICALLY qualified? So what might be the MINIMUM number?

The maximum number of points one of the non-playoff teams at this time could achieve (DC United) is 43 pts. You only have to beat two teams to make the playoffs, so if your team reaches this number, you're in for sure. Example: If San Jose get 2 wins in their next 2 matches, they wil qualify for the playoffs regardless of whether they lose every single match form then on.

This number will change from week to week, obviously, dependent on the current teams out of the playoffs and on results, but will only go down.

I think the cut off number will be 34 points. There are several interesting races right now.

    Western conference.
San Jose sits comfortably in first but have played two more games than LA and Dallas. LA and San Jose play each other their last two games of the season so, while Dallas plays each of those two teams one more time, this one is going to come down to the wire.

    the playoff cut.
    DC-NE-CLB
NE is one game off of CLB and DC is 5 pts back with a game in hand. CLB plays 5 of their last 8 on the road. Once again this one is going to come down to the wire.

    Jockeying for playoff position.
    Chi-Col-LA-KC-Met-DAL
These teams are within 4 pts of each other, one bad game could mean you go from the 3rd seed to the 7th seed. The Western confrence plays each other alot, so every game is important since a win will kill two birds with one stone, points for you, and no points for another playoff team.

All this parity is going to add up to an exciting last 8 or 9 games.

Hala, I think something has happened to your table. All I see is a bunch of code, and that was from two different computers.

Or is the problem from my end?

I am seeing the same thing. Oh well.. anywho... It is still possible for DC or NE to obtain the second seed. The revs are 2 wins from NY

Your math is a bit off. DC can get 47 and New England can get 46.

could it have possibly been that he got the team wrong because if the win out, other teams can't get all their points (because those teams will beat them)... thus lowering what wouldn't make it?

True, but it's not possible for both teams to reach those totals since they play one game vs. each other.

In order to compute the actual playoff qual number, you'd need to run through a whole mess of scenarios, and would probably need to do it by computer.

Didn't someone (perhaps Lucid?) run a simulation last year to compute the odds of various teams making the playoffs?
