There definitely was something up with the ref and his struggles to control the players. I don't recall feeling he was in bad positions but he certainly was slow/slack in his communications with folks @ VAR, and I feel the game suffered because of it. Like I said, the players seemed to risk more heavy challenges as the game wore on knowing most wouldn't be called. It was just all off somehow. That they didn't do anything after Martinez dust-up left us astounded. Maybe this was a case of the ref truly just having an off day?
I can only assume that this is your first time seeing Toledo in action? That game was just par for the course.
