Did you ever place your bet? At any rate, the warden was said to have been shocked upon hearing the news:
A plan that apparently includes building a mile-long tunnel directly to a shower stall? That's attention to detail! Can't wait to read the report on this. Unless someone thinks he Shawshanked himself out with a sharpened spoon! Considering that the cartels have lots of experience tunneling under the US border, no one should be surprised about this temporary diversion of resources.
Did anyone read the piece from The New Yorker a year ago on how El Chapo was captured? If not, here it is. Excellent stuff: The Hunt for El Chapo
Many years ago, I saw a program in which Mexican prisons were discussed. One story told was of a warden who'd tried to reform things. He was busy locking down the free access to the outside that some of the high profile prisoners had when someone visited him in his office and gave him an envelope. The envelope contained $50K and a picture of his two young children going to school that morning. He quit.
Great piece. "If a man like that can buy his freedom in Mexico today, then there is nothing in the country that is not for sale."
No need for the qualifying clause. There is nothing in Mexico that is not for sale. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/documents-us-agents-knew-el-chapo-escape-plots-32421218
More on El Chapo's tunnels: http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/14/world/mexico-el-chapo-escape/index.html http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/12/americas/mexico-el-chapo-escape-sinaloa-cartel-tunnels/index.html
The actual escape was caught on video: Was anyone watching the monitors? Did no one found it interesting that El Chapo put his clothes & shoes on, prior to taking a shower? Or, were people paid not to watch, or not to report?
http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/17/americas/mexico-el-chapo-escape/ "But jefe, Costa Rico & El Salvador were playing in the Copo Oro on the other monitor, and we were so distracted by the late equalizer, that we didn't notice how long El Chapo was spending in the shower!" "So, you think Jair Marrufo was involved?" "Well, jefe, the discussion about how he still manages to be an MLS ref was very heated. And, his father was Mexican."
For such a rich man, I question his decision making. He could have just moved to San Francisco where his freedom would have been given to him and saved his money.
He does have an American-citizen wife, who could have sponsored him, except for that pesky "Are you the murderous leader of a narcotics cartel?" question on the application. Also, he can't get away with shooting nearly as many people in SF, as he can in Mexico.
Mexico does something right! http://www.cbsnews.com/news/report-...guadalajara-mexico-after-24-years-on-the-run/ Now, if they can only manage to keep him in custody until he is turned over to US authorities...
Well Mexico does a few things right. http://www.globalpost.com/article/6646824/2015/09/10/meet-essa-hassan-mexicos-first-syrian-refugee I am sure there are many poor Mexicans in south Mexico that would love to apply for refuge status under this program. But to be fair, it is a private organization, probably started by Arab/ME-Mexicans, so the government should get no credit for this. http://www.proyectohabesha.org/english/index.html
Good luck to everyone in the path of (words that are chilling to type) the strongest hurricane ever recorded: http://www.weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/hurricane-patricia-mexico-coast Sustained 200 mph winds. Good Lord.
Shit is going to be crazy down there, Manzanillo I believe will take the main impact, hopefully the death total is low. The storm went from tropical to biggest ever in about 24 hours. Not a lot of preparation time.
From what I've read there was less damage than was expected although the rains will cause flooding. Think the Mexican coast really dodged a bullet. Has a storm gone from low level to raging monster in such a short time? This one snuck up on forecasters from what I could tell. Edit: this explains why. High ocean temps, little wind shear & El Nino Hurricanes really aren’t supposed to get stronger than Hurricane Patricia. That’s not hyperbole. Hurricanes shouldn’t see sustained winds above 190 miles per hour in Earth’s modern-day climate. Yet on Friday morning, Patricia’s winds were measured at about 200 miles per hour. That’s not the only exceptional aspect of the storm. The category-five tropical cyclone, now spinning off the western coast of Mexico, is expected to make landfall Friday evening. It will be the second-strongest storm to make landfall in history, after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines 2013. Remarkably, it only holds that “second strongest” title because it has weakened slightly in the past few hours. On Friday morning, Patricia was the strongest storm ever measured by the U.S. National Hurricane Center, which has monitored all storms in the Atlantic and north Pacific for the past half-century. Patricia got extremely strong, extremely fast. Late Wednesday evening, it was merely a strong tropical storm, with peak winds of 65 miles per hour. By the following morning, it had become a category-one hurricane; and by Friday morning, it had exceeded records. http://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2015/10/how-did-hurricane-patricia-intensify-so-fast/412246/
Mexican SC approves the use of weed by 5 individuals (those that sued). http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/04/americas/mexico-supreme-court-legal-marijuana/index.html Mexican counts are different, this (like the gay marriage case last year) does not mean it will become legal everywhere, it just means those 5 people can not be charged with the crime, other people can sue and would probably also win their cases.
