Daniel Osorno a former Mexican National team player will be joining the wizards this season from Mexican first div team Atlas. He's a left footed player thats a mid. He's good but not in his prime if i may say so. It will be interesting to see if he can regain his form here in the USA.
What? A 28 year old Mexican International - as in made 70+ appearances for a highly ranked national team? Why would you assume he's washed up? This seems like a great move to me on the surface even if he still has injury issues.
just did a quick google search, found this article http://www.munhispano.com/?nid=247&sid=1371846 I'm going through trying to translate it a bit right now.
from my weak attempt at translating (mainly using google's translation feature) it looks like he was wanting more playing time or something, and Atlas couldn't reach an agreement with another Mexican first division team to send him there.
Yeah, I've heard it too today on a Mexican radio sports show, Osorno himself confirmed the news. In Mexico is no secret that his personality has clashed with the one of his coach Romano, last year Romano sent Osorno to Primera A (mexican second tier) for several games, and Osorno has said that he wouldn't play for Romano ever again. He wanted out of Atlas but he couldn't cut a deal in Mexico, so he's gonna test the waters of MLS. Here's an abstract of a match in the second semester of 2006 in which Osorno had a good performance, something not quite common these days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgoh2NzF5WE In his early days Osorno was regarded as a great young prospect of Mexican soccer, he belongs to the generation of Rafa Marquez, that generation is filled with players that had lots of potential, but very few actually managed to realize that potential. As a youngster AC Milan showed interest to sign him, but clearly didn't happen, back then people called him Moctezuma (as the Aztec emperor) in reference of how his style was similar to Cuauhtemoc Blanco, needless to say that he's no Blanco and the nickname didn't stick. He really impressed on his first couple season starting for Atlas, and another foreign club showed interest to sign him, Osasuna of Spain, but he was never trasferred abroad, in Mexico he had a brief stint with Monterrey in the 2003-2004 season, a season that pretty much marks the point in which Osorno's career took a downslide, he returned to Atlas after a poor year with Monterrey and he hasn't done much after that, he had some interesting moments representing Mexico here and there, but was never an important player for the National Team. FYI, here's what I think the real problem of Osorno is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1O9yCna4FA On that story they show his activities, one of them is training young kids, and that's pretty cool, but is the rest of it what tells you where is his problem, he owns a club called "Danny Boy", just owning it is not a problem, but that he likes to be the DJ and in top of that that he has a musical group in which he plays and sings, well, clearly that kind of night life doesn't suit well to the career of a pro athlete.
Yes, you could say it is. As far as I know he's the only player in Mexico that does something like that. Soccer player / coach / club owner / dj /singer
Look what a change of scenery did for Joseph Ngwenya and Moreno. I say bring it on, we can definitely use midfield/forward depth. He can go clubbing with Hartman.
Because injuries have gotten him down. In his last 88 app. for Atlas he has 11 goals. 1 goal every eight games in not a very good strike ratio for a forward. I would rather us sign a younger player with a little more upside. Really a right winger would be nice.
Change of scenery example 2: Clint frigging Mathis. 5 goals already in 2007. A right winger would be nice, but really I'd take some right back competition as well. One doesn't necessarily include the other. If he can't play up to snuff, we have lots of other talented midfielders who will. He'll see the bench if he's not contributing. More competition for spots in practice is good I think.
This is an underwhelming announcement. A Mexi Nat, a man obviously not dedicated to soccer, on the downside, and a rumored clubhouse cancer. This is the tangible benifit to a relationship with Atlas? What's next, does KC ship Will John south for "education"? Hrrm. Oh well. Welcome to the Green Rat, good to have another player with knowledge, hope he help the club. When's the Israeli hero coming again?
You are ready to put this guy down without ever seeing him play a minute? Peter Vermes and Company saw something they liked in this player and that is the reason he is coming. With the results they are pulling this season, do you have a reason to doubt him? Marinelli has been a asset, what makes you think this cant be different? Give they guy a chance before slamming the move.
I'm not ready to slam this guy sight unseen, but I don't think he's a PV/CO guy per se. From the babelfish translation of the article posted earlier, it sounds like Osorno initiated the talks and they're just that, talks. Robb's post seems to hint at an Argentine signing, not a Mexican.
I was thinking the same. And I know that people weren't as high on Marinelli when he came over, but he seems to have worked out pretty well so far.
Right but Marinelli is still only 24. Mathis never should have left NY. His career went backwards after he went to RSL and Col.
Change of scenery example 3, 4, 5, 6: Kerry Zavagnin, Juan Pablo Angel, Jaime Moreno, Diego Forlan. If he sucks, he won't see the field. I don't see any reason why it would be a bad idea to bring Osorno in. Anybody who comes here is going to have to play their way on, as the squad has already shown it can be successful with the current personnel.
I just read this on medio tiempo. I had no Idea he was thinking of coming over, the article there says nothing is final and he could also go to Dallas or Chicago, but KC is his first choice since there is some sort of relationship between KC and Atlas. http://www.mediotiempo.com/noticia.php?id_noticia=40515
I didn't put it down. I said it was underwhelming. Still, he's a Green Rat. No way I'm in support of that...worse than being a 'Beaker or a member of the black and white. We'll see how it all shakes out, but this smacks of a "goodwill" move that shouldn't add up to much here.
