To play devil's advocate, I'm sure there are some at NF (clearly) who view the role of the keeper to be someone who also organizes the defense and plays a kind of coordinator role in addition to goalkeeper, and that a guy who is great at that would also smooth over some of their defensive problems. But...the proof is in the pudding and clearly the issue is with the backline, its composition, and its organization.
That Greek keeper will make a list of the "worst keepers in Premier League history" sooner or later. Hopefully Turner can avoid that infamy.
Will today be Turner's redemption day? (not likely, but hey, he/they beat ManU a few weeks ago - why not again today!) Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that none of Chris Wood, Ibrahim Sangare, Willy Boly, Ola Aina and Nuno Tavares will return for Forest. Harry Toffolo could drop in at left-back to shake up a defence which conceded four goals away to Aston Villa last time out. Go big or go home - Turner starts! Forest hosting Manchester Utd in the FA Cup (R16). {Reyna is on the bench.} [Odysseus backing up, Sels himself short.]
Goal wasn't really his fault but still not a good look to get five holed and not what you want when you're trying to prove yourself in the side
Disagree on it being a "bad look." The keeper cannot be everywhere. You make yourself big, and hope. Everything else is up to fortune or luck. Anyone assigning any blame to him for that is just being silly.
Announcers are starting to get really bad at this. Constantly blaming guys for poor play when they are essentially positioned correctly. There is variance in this game.
Matt Turner's last bunch of games for NF far as I remember. 1-0 loss to Man U 1-1 tie Bristol City 0-0 tie Bristol City 3-2 loss Brentford 2-1 Arsenal 1-3 Win v NUFC 1-2 Win V Manu 9 goals in 7 games - granted there's 2 Bristols in there, but it's not like the objective results are worse than the other keepers. Turner just had too many glaring/highlight mistakes, but he's not been a lot worse than Sels (if worse at all) and clearly better than Vlad.
TBH, I think there's confirmation bias from what people originally see. Initially it looked like the ball just went straight thru, and that Turner expected a redirection, but it didn't happen. But on replay it was indeed a glancing header. Yet some people really have a hard time going back on their first impression, regardless of the evidence. And it's especially true if it would have validated an opinion about that individual/thing beforehand. On balance, he had a good game. Stopped one that was behind him. Most keepers don't keep that out. Few stop the quick redirection. Had a few other halfway decent saves, came out of his net well, & didn't have any big distribution blunders. If they could get that from him or another keeper every match, they should be content. They just have to put away their chances, like they usually do. And defensively get less sloppy to not have incidences where they miss header clearances and allow their man to get all the way across them and in on net such as that.
Yeah, that's a point blank deflection header. "Saveable" in the sense of physically possible but it would have been a world class 10/10 save to react and stop it. No blame on Turner there.
Turner played OK today. Goal was not on him. He and Forest's defense were fortunate that the crossbar and post were friendly. Also Forest should have taken one of those first half chances that fell to their strikers.
Couldn't tell if that header at 3.27 or so was going to hit the post but that still a good react reset and save.
FWIW the Forest fans agree it wasn't his fault. xG for Forest was 0.64 and for United was 2.01. Turner managed six saves.
sorry but that wouldn’t have been a world class 10/10 save. It’s not a blunder either. A lot of keepers find a way to keep that out though.
That's a crazy tough save given how close it is to Turner and the close deflection and placement. He's not out of position. if a GK saves something like this usually he's lucky that it hit is leg or something.
Sounds as though Turner played well enough to re-enter the fray should Sels stumble. Next up: Forest v Liverpool on Saturday
Sorry, you're wrong. It was point blank right in between his legs giving him minimal time to react. There's 2 situations that's kept out - sheer luck & super-human reflexes. Might want to save that for when you have to dodge bullets. You only get to call on it a few times in your life.
Luton's next 4 games - and NF's next 3 - are going to be interesting. Luton has an extra game still to play and are 4 off NF for the last drop slot. NF have Pool (1) home, Brighton (6) away, then Luton away. Luton have AV (4) home, Palace (13) and B'mouth (14) away before the relegation Derby. Luton needs at least 1 more point out of their 3 games than NF get out of their 2 games to have a shot of jumping them on 3/16. Luton's loss to Sheffield U a few games ago took the wind out of their Wing and Prayer sails. Be interesting to see which team can grind it out from here on to May...
If there's any blame on that goal - which was an unusual ball extremely well-executed, it's Danilo (I think it was) who just didn't quite get his head to the ball in front of Casmiro. If he'd gone full vertical with a diving header he would have put it out for the corner, but that's a tricky ball all the way around and Cas just got a good (brave) nick to it.
It's not a howler, but it was Matt Turner's fault. It went through his legs. He has to stop that. He had some other good saves.
Danilo has to get a head to it, if we're going to blame someone - or at least keep Casmiro off the ball. Blaming the keeper on that one is... well... I doubt many folks in the Forest office are blaming Turner there. FWIW here are some reviews: GK: Matt Turner - 7/10 - Made a few good saves but stood no chance with the close proximity of Casemiro's flicked header. (90min.com) Matt Turner (8/10): Could do nothing about the goal, but was just about perfect otherwise. Made six saves ranging from the routine to the wonderful. A big message to the critics that he can perform at this type of level. (goal.com) Whoscored gave Matt a 7.2 - highest on the team... again, fwiw. Kind of sad/funny how many sites rating ManU players and barely noting that Forest were even there....lol
