10 minutes left, is it possible for Japan to turn this around, or will Ivory Coast succeed in a comeback?
Look at the difference when Drogba takes the free kicks. Nothing against Toure, but Drogba is better at this.
I've read the Wikipedia paragraph a few times and I can't figure out how it's supposed to be better to be called Cote d'Ivoire, which seems to be Ivory Coast just in French. I'd understand if it was some different name, i.e. Mumbai instead of Bombay, or Democratic Republic of Congo or something.
Hey Japan, give the ball away again. Thanks guys. Way to lay an egg in the tournament. At this rate I'm gonna have no one in the round of 16 I give a rat's ass about.
It's because they speak French. They're proud of their language since it's the one thing that binds them together. I know it's semantics but it says alot to be able to choose how you call yourself. It's like calling a guy named Jesus, Jesse or a guy named Jose, Joseph.
GG. The Africans win this one. Maybe not as impressive by only 1 goal, but a win is a win. I look forward to when they face Colombia.
ah, makes sense. Wikipedia implies it has something to do with geography and the country not being limited to what was historically known as the Ivory Coast... which changing it to the French name obviously doesn't solve.
Japan sat back too much, got tired, and looked pathetic after that first goal. I think trying to protect the lead made them too complacent.
Cote d'Ivoire with the second strongest performance of this tournament. Must be slight favorites over Colombia now. Serge Aurier making his international presence felt. Drogba the gamechanger, even if he wasn't directly involved in the goals. Serey Die was outstanding and Japan never felt like they had a chance at coming back.
I wouldn't say that. Good performance but they were very annoying even when they had control. Drogba gave them focus and that was enough to win. Columbia is still the favorite, but CIV can challenge them if they play like they did when Drogba came on... Bony looked scare at times when he got close to the ball.
Yes, it is somewhat of a misdemeanor. You will notice I almost never write 'Ivory Coast', always try to write 'Cote d'Ivoire'. National pride, French cultural heritage and there is some backdrop to the more negative connotation it carriers in general in English. Ivorians all in all will correct you if you say 'Ivory Coast'.
