This penalty gives me flashbacks to the early penalty in ESP-NED 2014. It looks so similar to that foul. Before it all fell apart for Spain!
For all the the talk about Mateu stealing the show, I love how he does it in the most understated way possible sometimes. The most nonchalant penalty award you'll ever see at a WC. Ted Unkel, that was not.
75': Restart as a... dropped ball? Assuming he's not stopping play for a foul committed against the goalkeeper, why's he stopping it at all? He gives some yellow cards in the end, presumably he stopped play because of some kind of misconduct that was happening. Surely this should result in an indirect free kick, no?
I think the sequence is: fair challenge; goalkeeper collects; pitch invaded (the reason for stopping play, so DB); confrontation and 2 YCs, one for each side.
I'll look again , but I mean, can you at least tell me while I wait for the ability to go back, was there any playing reason for his hands to go up? Like jumping to head or anything that could in anyway justify the arm coming up to block the service?
I actually highly doubt he stopped for a pitch invader. It will make some LOTG sticklers lose their mind, but I'd say... 1) Stop play for "other reason, not mentioned in Laws." At this point, he clearly hasn't decided to give any misconduct, he just wants to prevent escalation. And restart is automatically to goalkeeper. 2) Punishable misconduct occurs and is observed. 3) Pitch invader. 4) Cards given. 5) Restart dropped ball, per #1, because you didn't stop play to give the cards.
Based upon how long it took for the commentators to (abruptly) mention the pitch invader, I have serious doubts that the pitch invasion happen and Lahoz noticed it, all before the whistle sounded.
Dissent is always directed at match officials (it's an open challenge of their authority, by word or action). You might mean unsporting behavior. FWIW, two different players (one for each side) were cautioned.
That's why its a foul. IFAB expressly limited tactical handling to SPA a few years ago. Neither IFAB nor FIFA want a caution there.
