Yeah, if anything I think Turpin has been "gutsy" in a lot of ways. He's just also been wrong in a couple, too. But to the Diveev foul, yes, I thought he hand'ed that very well. Despite probably knowing he had erred earlier and realizing a 2CT would be quite popular, he did the right thing there.
Given how good the officiating has been and how good the French national team is, Turpin's only hope is a perceived imbalanced R16 match, I think. And, obviously one not involving Denmark. I think the only way you see Turpin again is if it essentially feels required by UEFA, due to the availability of others viz-a-viz the teams and matchups.
It was right in front of him. And the VAR knows the penalty was soft. No way that's getting sent down as a clear error.
Okay, I'll respond. I don't think Turpin is necessarily a chicken, but I think he chickened out on the 2CT. But I also think that just as much blame rests on UEFA who don't like RC's, forcing referees to decide between the correct call and the preferred outcome. For the penalty, I think it's soft, but on the replay that seemed to be from the perspective of what Turpin would have seen, I understand why he thought it was a PK. I don't think Diveev should have been 2CT, not after the first one for sure. I like Turpin. I just haven't loved his performance this game, between not handling the time wasting well to the missed 2CT. But agreed with others - Denmark have saved him from being the story.
From a media storm, sure. But I think there have been more than enough problems here to put him in deep trouble for another assignment. The stars have to align now, whereas he was almost certainly a guarantee R16 or QF referee heading into the tournament.
