yeah but OM's last game was a road game and they will be out for revenge and take it out on Porto. Do you really think Porto can come into Marseille and get 3 points ? You'd better pray for a draw. It will be a very hostile enviorment at The Velodrome.

Porto can definitely earn the three points at the Velodrome, but it will be a very tough match and Porto will need Deco at his best (see Sunday's two goal, one assist performance against Belenenses) to seal the deal.

    Simao,

Porto did win the UEFA Cup last year. And, by the end of the season, it was playing as well as any club in Europe. Porto has players to match up with all of OM's stars.

Porto is very more experimented than Marseille, the most of OM'players are new in european cup, I think it is the more important difference between the 2 teams, but OM will won.

Talk is cheap y'all. For the record, Porto leads Marseille 2-1 at the half. Sounds like a lively game. Drogba opens the scoring for l'OM in the 24th, but Maniche and Derlei counter back in the 31st and 34th to give the Dragoes the lead. Both sides with a pair of yellows. Should be a good second half.

3-1 FCP in the 81st on an Alenitchev goal.

Shite. Now 3-2 in the 84th. Marlet for l'OM.

    Should be an exciting finish...

    Final score:

FC Porto 3-2 Olympique de Marseille

Gritty, impressive road win. Now Porto have to hold tough in the second leg of this home-and-home next week to secure more points and keep the pressure on. Forca Porto!

    Standings:

    Real Madrid----------9
    FC Porto------------4
    Olympique Marseille--3
    Partizan Belgrade----1

Porto did win the champions league in 87, Intercontinental cup, European supercup

Porto just put a show today in France, just a superb team puts a performance like that, the french once again got beat by the portuguese team, last year Boavista also beat favorite PSG, Marselha, Monaco on the way to the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup.

7 goals allowed by OM in their last 2 games. Don't worry Barthez is coming real soon.

True, as of now Porto has the upper hand, but how fast these things change--before today the consensus around these boards (to which I contributed) was that OM had it all over us.

Here's a simple way to look at things:

    1. Porto needs to take care of business at home. If it wins its remaining home games against OM and Partizan, Porto will advance.

    2. Forca Real--we need Real to help our cause by dismissing Partizan next time out (which will effectively eliminate them), and beating OM as well. Another advantage to Real winning in Belgrade would be that they will clinch qualification, and perhaps not try as hard when they play Porto.

    Slick Porto outplay vulnerable Marseille

    (writes through adding quotes, details)

    By Timothy Collings

MARSEILLE, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Porto recovered after falling a goal behind to outplay a defensively vulnerable Olympique Marseille and win 3-2 in their Champions League clash at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday.

Porto's deserved victory makes them favourites to take second place in Group F behind likely group winners Real Madrid, who beat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 at the Bernabeu, and piled the pressure on Marseille's controversial coach Alain Perrin whose tactics and preparation for the game appeared questionable.

In an open and attractive contest, Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba struck his fifth goal in the competition this season to put Marseille ahead after 24 minutes.

But Porto replied in style with goals from midfielder Maniche on 31 minutes and Brazilian Derlei four minutes later to take control and leave Marseille frustrated and disjointed as they toiled in vain for an equaliser.

Russian substitute Dmitri Alenitchev scored Porto's third with a simple tap-in to conclude a slick passing move in the 81st minute, eight minutes after he had come on.

However, Marseille, lifted by the pace of their own Russian substitute striker Dmitri Sytchev, rallied to pull one back when Steve Marlet headed in from a free kick with six minutes of normal time remaining.

    DECISIVE CONTEST

The victory was critical for Porto whose coach Jose Mourinho said he could not tolerate the idea of not winning what he believed to be a decisive contest for the runners-up place.

After three matches, Real lead the table with nine points followed by Porto on four, Marseille with three and Partizan, whose defeat in Spain leaves them bottom with just one point.

It was Porto's first win on French soil in a European tie since the 1964-65 season when they won at Olympique Lyon.

But Perrin, under fire for failing to counter Porto's impressive five-man midfield and questioned about the wisdom of signing Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez in the run-up to such an important game, shrugged off his critics.

"We could have led 2-0, we had chances, and I thought we deserved a draw at least," he said. "I think we will have an interesting game in Portugal when we go there and we will have to attack. We can still do something in this group."

Marseille appeared to be nervous from the start. Porto made a high-tempo opening and quickly stretched the home defence with swift interchanges and passing moves, but it was Marseille who had the first chance when Drogba shot over after three minutes.

The Ivory Coast striker's power was Marseille's main threat and, after Steve Marlet had a bouncing header saved and a run and shot from Deco was also stopped easily, he fired them ahead with his fifth goal in three Champions League appearances this season.

The goal came from a direct move initiated by Swiss midfielder and captain Fabio Celestini's chipped forward pass. Marlet flicked it on and Drogba, powering into space, forced the ball past Vitor Baia with an accurate low shot.

    INSPIRED PORTO

This setback seemed to inspire Porto, last season's UEFA Cup and Portuguese double winners, and they levelled just seven minutes later with a well-taken goal from Maniche.

Deco, impressive in a floating central midfield role, switched play to the right where Derlei collected and set up Maniche to score with an angled right-foot shot past Vedran Runje.

This roused Porto to press for another goal immediately and the ponderous and vulnerable Marseille defence, which had produced a stream of errors from the start, was breached again after 35 minutes.

Brazilian striker Derlei scored this time, cleverly drifting into an unmarked position on the right from where he struck a low left-foot shot past the luckless Croatian goalkeeper.

Not even France keeper Fabien Barthez, set to sign for Marseille on loan this week, would have reached it at his best.

Frustration crept into Marseille's play as Porto began to show their technical artistry and positional fluency and Drogba and Mido were both cautioned as the Greek referee appeared to be in danger of losing control.

He produced seven yellow cards and played an extra five minutes to make up for all the time lost to the theatrical displays of injury by the Porto players. The stretcher was used three times in the second half as they hung on for their win.

not possible, because he will not allowed to play in european matchs before the 8th...
but I hope Christanval will be there to replace the bad Meité, and we waiting for the back of Dos Santos, because Ecker is very bad and he is guilty for 2 of the 3 goals last night,
I don't think Runje is guilty...

Shame that Deco can't play next game against Marseille...Can Porto beat Marseille without Deco? what you guys think?
I personally think Porto can beat them without Deco...Porto's midfield is just to strong even without Deco (Costinha, Alenichev and Maniche) and after this win they are confident and inspired....
