Yea, it's probably because teams 5-12 in the EPL have improved a lot. Teams 12-20 are still shite, but are less shite.

Also the emphasis on defense has increased, either teams got better defensively (by playing more cautious) or have employed better defenders.

Did some quick number crunching and here's what I came up with.

05/06 PL teams on average scored 1.24 goals per game. (led by 27 from Henry, 21 from Nistelrooy, and 18 from Bent)
06/07 averaged 1.23 GPG. (led by 20 from Drogba, 18 from McCarthy, and 17 from Christiano)
07/08 averaged 1.32 GPG (led by 31 from Ronaldo and 24 from both Abedayor and Torres)
Current season is averaging 1.23 GPG (led by 17 from Ronaldo, 15 from Anelka (when was the last time this guy scored a domestic goal???), and Gerrard, Robinho, and Torres tied for 13)

Was thinking the same myself yesterday after I noticed Ronaldo had gone top (he is having such a terrible season). He scored a goal vs. Villa in February, and apart from that his last league goal came on December 14th, 2008 in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. He has picked up a hat-trick vs. Watford and a single goal vs. Southend in the FA Cup i nthe meantime.

Actual #9 standards across football have decreased dramatically over the last few years. It's definitely not just the PL.

There's nothing to actually hoard - we don't even have a #9 in our immediate team selections outside of a kid from the reserves.

Werent there two assists for Rooney against Spurs, one for Ronaldo's goal and the other for Berba's ?

Why should Rooney get both assists? Berbatov had to fight to get the rebound and then score.

    lol, true.

No, I just wanted us to be able to go back and say that this is the absolutely stingiest possible account of goals and assists years down the road.

That is like saying why it is an assist if someone takes another touch after a through ball, I thought it was an assist, Rooney did most the work there, Lazytoff should have put it in first time, not Rooney fault. ;)

So you wont give him an assist last week, well he gets one this week, take that you haters.

Is this Rooney's best season or the one with 23 goals and 10-12 assist better than this (the year before last season) ?

Our resident holding midfielder has as much prem goals as Tevez by the way and Kiko is just one behind.

Why Macheda has an assist for the Giggs goal, he didnt touch the ball did he ?

Is it given as an official assist or just a DS assist ?

I'm pretty sure he did touch the ball, even if all he did was screen the man off the ball it was worth an assist though, because there's no way it gets to Giggsy without his effort.

But you didnt give an assist to Rooney last week, the ball would never have gotten to Berbatov either without his effort.

Either both are assists or none of them are.

The last interaction before Berbatov's goal was Berbatov's shot. Had he missed completely, there'd be no goal. That is different from Macheda making sure that the ball got to Giggs who shot immediately upon receipt.

I am commenting on the assumption that Mach didnt touch the ball but "screened" hte man off the ball, if there was no contact with the ball there cant be an assist. Imagine the crap that would open up.

Imagine: I am flying down the middle with the ball at my feet. Ronaldo makes a run to my right, becasue I suck all the defenders assume CR7 is going get the ball so they all go to cover him, I close my eyes and toe poke the ball as hard as I could, the keeper was dying with laughter at my effort and the ball ball creeps by him making it one inch over the goal line. Does CR7 get an assist or does the keeper get charged with an own goal?

Okay only the first paragraph is fully on point I just got carried away with the second. But my point is wont there have to be substantial contact on the ball for an assist to be given otherwise we could engineer a wide range of scenarios eg a clever dummy?

That line of argument is all well and dandy if you believe that the defender was never going to clear the ball. If you look at the goal, the defender is actively trying to clear the ball. I believe Macheda got a touch on it to Giggs, but even if he didn't him shielding the ball from the defender is what allowed it to come to Giggs. He physically held off a defender trying to clear the ball. It wasn't as if he dummied a ball that was intended for Giggs.

Carrick appears to be a better shooter on his left side than his right.

    Strange chap that he is.
