Historical amazing stupidity: The final game of the 1926 World Series between the Yankees and Cardinals ended with Babe Ruth getting thrown out trying to steal second base with 2 outs, Bob Meusel at bat, and Lou Gehrig on deck. The Yanks lost 3-2 and the Series went to the Cards 4 games to 3.
David Ortiz is 11-for-15 (.733). The rest of the Red Sox are batting a combined .151! (With Ortiz added, they are .205) The record for hits in a World Series is 13, held by Bobby Richardson (1964 Yankees), Lou Brock (1968 Cardinals) and Marty Barrett (1986 Red Sox). In addition to being the MVP frontrunner, he's in a pretty good position to break a record and a streak associated with that record (all three of those guys were on the losing team). Interesting also: all three of those series involved either the Cardinals or the Red Sox.

Six for Jadi! He ties the number won by my little league coach, who was home for summer vacation from the U of Iowa Don't think he's going to catch up to Ivan Rodriguez's dozen (IIRC). Maybe, with luck, Johnny Bench, who had around ten.
Yadi is the only catcher in my lifetime that I think can fairly be compared to Bench. Btw, I was at game 4. The girl in front of me had a shirt on that read: Stealing second? Yadier, freakin' mind? I thought it was clever.

COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR A.L. Mariano Rivera, Yankees N.L. Francisco Liriano, Pirates Second time Liriano has won this award. He received it playing for the Minnesota Twins in 2010.
Mlb Announces finalists for MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of The Year http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2013/11/5/5070484/mlb-mvp-cy-young-finalists-awards-2013 MVP American League Miguel Cabrera, 3B - Tigers Mike Trout, OF - Angels Chris Davis, 1B - Orioles National League Paul Goldschmidt, 1B - Diamondbacks Andrew McCutchen, OF - Pirates Yadier Molina, C - Cardinals Cy Young AL Yu Darvish, SP - Rangers Hisashi Iwakuma, SP - Mariners Max Scherzer, SP - Tigers NL Jose Fernandez, SP - Marlins Clayton Kershaw, SP - Dodgers Adam Wainwright, SP - Cardinals Rookie of the Year AL Chris Archer, SP - Rays Jose Iglesias, SS - Tigers Wil Myers, OF - Rays NL Jose Fernandez, SP - Marlins Shelby Miller, SP - Cardinals Yasiel Puig, OF - Dodgers Manager of the Year AL John Farrell - Red Sox Terry Francona - Indians Bob Melvin - Athletics NL Fredi Gonzalez - Braves Clint Hurdle - Pirates Don Mattingly - Dodgers My Picks when available
My picks on these selected awards: MVP A.L. Miguel Cabrera, 3B - Tigers (44 HR, 137 RBI, .348 BA) Mike Trout, OF - Angels Chris Davis, 1B - Orioles (53 HR, 138 RBI, .286 BA) (Cabrera 62-point lead in batting over Davis, and the O's didn't make the playoff cut) Cy Young A.L. Yu Darvish, SP - Rangers (13-9, 2.83) Hisashi Iwakuma, SP - Mariners Max Scherzer, SP - Tigers (21-3, 2.90) (That kind of win-loss is rare these days, and the Rangers didn't make the playoffs) N.L. Jose Fernandez, SP - Marlins Shelby Miller, SP - Cardinals Yasiel Puig, OF - Dodgers (Puig added lots of excitement and spice to the season, and contributed to LA taking off after a terrible start) Manager of the Year A.L. John Farrell - Red Sox Terry Francona - Indians Bob Melvin - Athletics (How this could go to anyone but Farrell is beyond belief. From last to first on a club left a disfunctional mess by Bobby Valentine. I won't bring up the championship, since these awards are voted prior to post-season action.)
Francona edged out John Farrell, winning 112 points to 96. Maybe they should give a piece to the award to Jason Giambi, who became Terry's right-hand man running the show in Cleveland. Giambi, despite dreadful numbers this last season (9 HRs, 31 RBIs, .183 BA), was just re-signed to a minor league contract with the Indians. Giambi Excited to Stay with Indians Next Season - MLB http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/cle...md=20131101&content_id=63612064&vkey=news_cle Francona never won Manager of the Year during his time with the Red Sox, including the world championship years of 2004 and 2007. With Farrell losing this year, I wonder if there's some sort of rule against Boston receiving this honor! Hurdle walked away with the NL award, taking 25 of 30 first-place votes.
2013 Cy Young Award, named in honor of the guy who holds the M.L.B. Record for most losses in a career... N.L. Clayton Kershaw, LA Dodgers A.L. Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers ( born and raised in St. Louis, incidentally, and drafted by the Cards out of high school, but he made a good call (for him) and went to Mizzou)
Kershaw's second Cy Young win, getting it in 2011 (and finishing 2nd last season). He took 29 out of 30 first-place votes. Adam Wainwright was named 1st on one ballot. Scherzer picked up 28 of 30 first place votes.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER A.L. Miguel Cabrera, Tigers N.L. Andrew McCutchen, Pirates Cabrera becomes the first back-to-back MVP winner since Frank Thomas did it in 1993 & 1994. He got 23 of 30 first-place votes and an overall total of 385 points. Mike Trout finished second, with 5 first-place votes and 282 points. Chris Davis was third with 232 points. McCutchen received 28 of 30 first-place votes. Yadier Molina received the other 2 first-place votes, but overall ended up 3rd behind Paul Goldschmidt. Final tally: McCutchen 409, Goldschmidt 242, Molina 219.
