The US team for the U-20 world championships includes Magee, but not Gaven. I assume this is because Magee has been playing with the U-20's for awhile, but Gaven hasn't. But based on their play with the Metros this year, I would definitely take Gaven over Magee for any team. Although Gaven is younger, I think he's a much better player right now. If you were coach of the U-20s, who would you take?

Magee lead the U20s in scoring when he was 18.

of course they're not really competing with each other for a spot. Magee has been pretty regular on the U20 squad, and Gaven has never been called in by them.

As noted, Gaven has been called in to the U23 squad for these qualifiers. When some others are added, (Kelly Gray, Landon Donovan) Gaven will be challenged to stay on the that U23 team for the qualifying tournament in Mexico early next year (but I wouldn't bet against him at this point). For either player, it's probably best to only play in one of these events and get a LITTLE time to rest before next spring, rest being something we don't seem to think our players need in this country.

Actually, the real answer is Wrongen and Ellinger are morons for not taking Gaven.
A bit back - Ellinger said that he would not take any of the U-17s on the team when asked about Adu. So if he brings aboard Gaven, there would be quite a bit of controversy.
If I were U-20 coach, both Magee and Gaven would be on the team.
(Kinda comparing apples and oranges if you want an either /or scenario with the two Metros in question.)

FWIW, Gaven's exclusion is the main question about this roster on the Youth boards.

Also Gaven is on the U-23's because he didn't make the U-20s. It would never have been one or the other

Hard to answer this. I would say Magee is better right at this point in time. Maybe, that won't stay that way at a later date.

Also if you say Gavan is the better player overalll. Then you would also have to concede that Adu should be on the team because Adu was the best player on a team that both Gavan and Adu played for the Under 17 National team.

I watched the entire Metros season and I would say that in their very short careers it seems that Gaven is maturing into a real pro and Magee is becoming a whiner.

I would take Gaven in a heartbeat.

Then I will put this question to you if you rather have Gaven in this team over Magee. Would you want Adu on this team because between Gaven and Adu on the under 17 team. Adu was without a doubt the better player if you had to compare the two at that time which was not very long ago.

Re: Re: Re: Magee vs. Gaven

If I wanted a comparison of Gaven vs. Adu, I would've started the thread on the USA youth teams board. Personally, I've never seen a USA u-17 game so I have no opinion on Gaven vs. Adu. However, I watch the Metros and my opinion is that Gaven is a significantly better player than Magee. So I was curious what other Metro fans thought about Gaven vs Magee. That's why I posted on this board.

Re: Re: Re: Magee vs. Gaven

I don't know, yet; because I have not watched Adu enough. If he really is better than (and can mature like) Gaven, then we have a luxury problem here.

    Gaven v Magee

Lets try to get it back on topic.

I like having both of them.

Magee started well. I remember from somewhere that Bradley instructed him to play like a poacher. That is how he picked up most if not all of his goals. 7 goals is a nice number for an 18 year old that was not expected to play much, even if they all came early. He started the year having trouble keeping possesion and improved greatly. He still has trouble taking people on "one on one". That is not good for a forward. You expect the abilitly to create your own shot from forwards of any age. Hopefully we see improvement next year. He seems to be a worker and highly motivated. Considering the draft pick used on him Bradley must have a high opinion.

Gaven started the year in Bradenton, came back as a 16 year old and picked up some playing time. Took off for the U-17 championships before returning to the struggling Metro FC. His play earns him a starting position and he shows well. He shows the ability to create shots and create opportunities for the team. This kid impressed alot of people.

Gaven is presently with the U-23 team that beat St. Kitts 6-0. Hopefully that will give him a little playing time with them on the return leg. I expect Gaven to be included in the U-20 team next year.
He may be the next Convey playing on several national teams. Sorry but that would not leave enough time on the Metro FC.

Magee is on the U-20 team that will be playing soon. He has not had that much playing time with them. Preference was given to E. Johnson and S. Quaranta. I believe he will start. Heres hopeing the U.S. does well with Magee scoring in bunches.

Why was Gaven not call to the U20 World Cup team?

Eddie Gaven plays with the U23 Olympic team and his not getting call to the U20 World Cup team

Rongen better win the WC or will be gone at the end of it.
